That's a lot of £££, but turn it into $$$ and it's truly frightening!

These pre-war Console Grandes did not incorporate neck switches into their circuits. The chrome contraption (actually, it's nickel) that you see there is a mute which when pulled into position, completely deadens the string vibration of the selected neck so as to prevent overtones from feeding into the pickup on the live neck being played. Low tech at it's best!

I'm astonished at this. I know that the market is pretty good (fat chance of me laying my hands on one at the moment at the right price!)but even so - I wrote to the seller:
"Can you tell me upon what criteria you've set this price? I'm asking because I've been looking for a Console Grande for a while and my own research puts an instrument of this kind in the £700-£850 range. Does it have a particular provenance or is a specific custom model?"
I've also been looking for a Gibson EH 150 Lap steel - the last one I saw was for $950 (ebay again) and was in pretty poor repair. Can anyone give me a guide about reasonable prices for Grande Consoles and EH150? - Cris

To give you some idea of what a London shop thinks lap steel are worth, http://www.hanksguitarshop.com/
These prices are fairly typical.
