I know right off the bat that this question doesn't have anything to do with the steel guitar, but I found my dad's old mandolin and I want to restring it and I need to know the gauges and what note to tune it to.Thanks!

From hi to lo the tuning is EEAADDGG, same intervals as a fiddle.

You can buy ready-made mandolin sets, medium/heavy gages are approximately...

0.011"
0.016"
0.026"
0.040"

Now you'll be able to play the "Blues man" (Alan Jackson version) and handle all the parts !

Hello Steve - I repair instruments as my day job and I would recommend a lighter guage string set for that old mandolin, especially if it hasn't been strung for awhile. Something like: .010 1st&2nd tuned to "e"
.014 3rd&4th tuned to "a"
.024wnd. 5th&6th tuned to "d"
.034wnd. 7th&8th tuned to "g"
I remember doing a show that you were on when you played for Cissy Lynn. Man, you guys were great and were able to switch alot of instruments. You turned me on to George L's strings and I still use 'em. It's good to see you on the Forum!
