IN TUNE or OUT of TUNE? That's the quesiton
Anyone see the Opry tonight?
Please tell me: Was ROY CLARK "out of tune" not only on his own 5th string but with his own band as well...... He sounded sharp all evening to his own fiddle section.
Has my hearing failed me or what?

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Have any of you ever played out of tune? Or do you all have perfect pitch?????
I have known Roy Clark for many years and I admire him as a musician as well as a man.
Seems like this is the critic's corner. You should all achieve in your lifetime what Roy
has,,then you could be justified.
I heard Les Paul play out of tune one night at a club here in NYC.....does that make him bad? I have heard Chet play a bit out of tune as well,,,,I play out of tune sometimes,,it amazes me what Iam reading here
and to think I belong to this "fraternity"?
If so,,,,then Iam an "ex member" PERIOD
I'm really suprised at you people...give me a
break. If you cant say something nice,,,,why say it at all,,,,,nothing else to occupy your time I guess....Did anyone on this thread ever play the "Opry"??? he got paid for that appearance while you all sat at home
,,,Im suprised at all of you,,,and this is supposed to be a Forum of Friends...boy with friends like you,,,,who needs enemies.
Jody Carver....a friend of Roy Clark.
Ray,,,Im suprised at you...Al you are the only one I would praise here,,,,,your comment
shows that you are a "Pro" but then again,,I
have always known that.

Well Jody! I tho't that "close" only applied to horseshoes, handgranades and atomic bombs. It was a horrible display! I believe most "pro's" would have applauded him had he simply stopped the tune....tuned it correctly and then continued on! Just my opinion......
Nowhere did I criticize "the man", his business ethics or anything else! I merely asked if he was out of tune?

Uh, is Roy Clark playing steel now, or is this totally off topic?

Not only is this off topic,,,,it shows disrespect for a fine musician who have given
all of us who know him as guitarist we can be proud to call "country" and part of our roots.
Ray my friend,,,you may have not in your own way tried to demean Roy Clark,,but you certainly "lit the fire".
Read the others comments and see what I see.
It reminds me of the person who lights the fire and then walks away as the fire burns.
If bOb wants a critic corner on the Forum as who and how to judge a persons musical ability,,,,thats fine with me,,,,but to start a thread as you did was "out of order"
I didnt think it was necessary or appropriate
especially from you who I had a lot of respect for.
This may show the reason why many of the "pro's choose not to post on this Forum.
Only Al Marcus proved once again to be the pro and gentleman he is,,
I see many threads that are simply ridiculous
thats OK,,,,it dont hurt anyone,,,,but to put a man down as was done here and then watch the fire burn after you lit it,,,dont
"cut the ice with me".
Read the comments made by people who couldnt carry Roy Clarks guitar case.
Again,,,,,,you disappointed me,,,,,you play good,,,but your taste in posting what you did
leaves me cold.
Sorry my good friend,,,but I have no stomach for things like this,,,I posted how well you played didnt I ???? did I critique you????
If I can say something nice I will,,,,if not
I say NOTHING....can you understand that???.
Nero lit the fire and walked away and watched the fire burn.
bOb....put out this fire please and "forgive"
those who abused the privledge of posting their comments,,,I do not have the stomach to look at this kind of nonsense.
I will not reply again,,,,this is going beyond the limit. Who are you? any of you, to
critisize a great player as you did,,,
You ought to practice your steel guitar and hope one day to walk in the same shoes Roy Clark walks in,,,and that I doubt will happen.
Do not e mail me,,,I will not reply.
Im off this Forum,,and I'm sorry bOb...but I cannot and will not be a part of things like this. I like to "build" people up....not "tear them down" thats what Iam and
Im dammed proud of it. Sorry bOb...I can not tolerate this kind of behavior.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jody Carver on 30 April 2002 at 05:59 AM.]</p></FONT>

This is not any excuse, but anytime I play the Opry I have to set my steel on the side of the stage early because it is cooler there than it is in the backstage dressing rooms and I found that if I tune in there and then bring my steel straight out to play, my steel will be sharp after it hits the cooler stage area. So, I tune my steel again after it has set side-stage for about 30 minutes.I suspect that is what happened to Roy's guitars.

A can of worms is here again,How many people
have went to tune before a gig with the guitar player and found that he might be 3 or more cents sharp with you if you indeed tuned with a digital tuner at a tunnig fork @@440.This is a funny senerio.I have found this to be true.Is there a right way and a wrong way to use an electonic tuner?I tune with a digital tuner and automaticly tune 3 cents sharp because that is where the guitar ends up being tuned too.I f you have this sensrio,i wonder about the cps fall off and gain on the indicator hand and when you stopp tunning on the individual string as per say.Could this make the 3 cent sharp senerio?

Boy, I thought it was MY ears! Thanks for the post because he sounded out of tune to me just as you described. Jody I think YOU are out of line and over reacting. I hope someone has the class to tell me that I am out of tune when I'm playing. I want to know when I'm wrong. This is a forum for discussion. No one is saying that Roy Clark is not a legend. He was just out of tune. <FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 30 April 2002 at 10:19 AM.]</p></FONT>
I did not hear the program.
From reading all the posts, it appears that his guitar WAS out of tune. If it was, I believe with all my heart Roy would welcome players telling him so! After all, what other's hear is a better indication than what a player hears.
Recently BE played on the ET midnight jamboree. A lot of steel players were there. Buddy commented about his sound and asked on this forum, "how did it sound?" I seem to recall he may have been using some different equipment. Not sure.
Again, I think Buddy would welcome something OTHER than, "everything is perfect". Which it IS most of the time.
Later I was able to retrieve this show on the WSM website. And sorry, but Buddy's sound was thin to my ears. Now, ain't NO body on this earth has more admiration, love and respect for BE than I do. But his sound on this website to my ears was thin. NOT the sound I have loved so much for sooo many years. I see NOTHING wrong with saying it. And I would say it directly to him. I believe he would appreciate hearing it.
Several years ago, I posted (and Buddy asked me about it) that I loved everything Buddy had ever done but "one note". Actually it was one chord which I should have said rather than one note.
AFTER I said that, Buddy hugged me (the major thrill of my life) at ISGC. So I don't believe he felt it was being critical, but simply saying what I sincerely felt.
Please Jody, rethink your decision. I believe you may have perceived something other than what was said in this thread.
God bless you and all the rest of you,
carl

Whew! The moon or the month? I think most of us can handle some constructive criticism. If you're out of tune, you're out of tune. I'm sure Roy would agree if he hears the playback? I don't think anyone is trying to defame him?
If you think this is bad, try to enjoy a vacation in the holy land

If Roy was out of tune,,I'm sure his fellow musicians let him be aware of it. I refuse to
comment any further on grounds that may incriminate me,,,I take the 5th amendment.
Please no more "bait" this Fish aint biting.

Jody, With all due respect to how you feel, and I mean that, this is not the first time someone has been criticized on the Forum. I can't tell you how many posts have insulted guitar-players, singers, producers, sound engineers, etc. etc. And often they don't say why. They just say somehting like "I hate singers", or something to that effect. In fact the only people that don't get criticized are steel-players (duh, what a surprise!!). Every steel player is great. Every steel-player is a pro. Blah, blah, blah... But if you are not a steel-player you are fair game. Perhaps it was politically incorrect to criticize an icon like Roy Clark, but again, criticisms against anyone (other than steel palyers) is quite commonplace on the Forum. So don't take it so hard.
