Just returned from the 10 Annual Iowa Steel Guitar show. It was a fantastic Steel Show at the beautiful Electric Park Ball Room. Thanks Lefty, and the rest of the crew, for being so kind to the wife and I. The "Young Steel Kid", Eddie Lange, got a standing ovation. I predict Eddie will be among the top players in the world if he keeps going. The new Williams Guitar Eddie was playing was singing a tune. Roger Miller and the rest of the staff band did a great job backing the artists. I really loved the program Larry and the guys from Ottumwa, Iowa played. I want to thank the all girl, plus one guy band who backed me up. I wasn't taking any hostiages! While I was playing, didn't see Scotty walk up on stage behind me until he put his hand on my back. I was so into playing, it scared me for a second. Terry Bethel did a wonderful job on his set. The last player of the night was Doug Jernigan. Doug really had a great sound. Found out some people can drink several cans of tuning fluid. |

I also just returned from Iowa. However, Keith forget to mention that he also played a great set. I know that Keith doesn't want to brag, so I will do it for him. It was a great weekend. I left early on Sunday, but from the start of the show on Saturday, until I left, it was just great music all weekend long.
Yes, Eddie Lange did get a standing ovation, and he also was graced on stage by Scotty's presence. Scotty also invited Eddie to play on the Convention, if an opening should come up. So watch for this event to be announced, and if you miss St. Louis this year, you might miss Eddie.
I do not intend this to be a brag posting about Eddie, but we have discussed the future of the steel guitar on this forum in the past, and with the passing of the old guard in the near future, meaning that Day is gone, Emmons is not playing the convention anymore and other players getting up in age, the youth of our nation will be taking over the stage. With the young players such as Eddie Lange, and David Spires, and other as yet unkown, the future will be secured. Let's encourage them and promote the ones in your area, so that we can see the next generation rise up and continue to expand on the capability of this great instrument.

Yes...all of the above! A very fine show. It gets better every year. The incentive to play better is just passed from player to player. Great comradere.
And Eddie....don't forget...your girlfriend's name is Williams! Four legs aint that bad? She's steady! You're young and still have time to mess up. Continue with education/college. Music major or whatever? But continue. Music is so addictive and insecure
Keith...You were getting a great tone from that Zum and whatever brand of volume pedal you were using! OH...and you always get more applause and whistles when you have a couple of girls and Kenny Price's illegitimate son (look alike) playing behind you! Heh Heh! Seriously, you sounded great.
It goes without saying, Scotty, Doug Jernigan and Terry Bethel did a super job.
I would like to mention the names of everyone that played at Waterloo this weekend, but it would eat up too much space.
Thanks for organizing a fine show Lefty, Dale and Craig, etc....

I would like to thank all the players that came to the show and gave of their time and talent. Also all the people that came to listen. There would not be a show without you showing up and supporting us.
Keith, you put on a great set as always. I can't remember what you played because I was too busy watching Jeannie and Dusty.
Dennis A.,it was nice to see you and your lovely wife again.
Dennis D., I always love hearing you play.
You pick the most incredible songs.
Doug and Terry picked their butts off. It was nice to hear the different styles that they both play.
And Eddie, what is there to say? This man can just flat pick a guitar. The future is looking bright with him around.
If you happened to miss the performance with Eddie and Albert on Sunday, you missed the best half hour of the weekend. It was just incredible.
On behalf of myself,Lefty, and Craig,I would like to thank everyone again for coming and supporting the show. |

Thanks so much guys for the wonderful compliments. I really don't know what to say. I was overwhelmed on stage when Scotty invited me to play in St. Louis if there is an opening. I really don't feel like I have paid enough dues. It was a fantastic show this year. Keith, Dennis, Dale, Lefty Schrage, Craig Davidson, Dave Alfstad, Dan Hedlund, Kim Miller, Bruce Czarnetski, Dean Dobbins, and everybody else too numerous to mention all played awesome sets. Every player I heard all weekend was very good. Albert, it was a blast finishing your set with you. We'll do it again, buddy. And to Dennis Atkins, thank you for putting me on your shows from the beginning. I am already looking forward to next year in Waterloo!

While the 10th Northeast Iowa Steel Guitar Jam is now history, memories of this event will linger for many years to come. It was apparent the quality of player performances moved another notch higher at this year's show--heard comments that several of the artists must have been 'woodshedding' due to the variety and quality of new songs and arrangements that were heard. And, as mentioned in another post, performances by Scotty, Doug, and Terry were absolutely awesome and the audience response reflected great appreciation for their mastery. We were personally elated to see Scotty extend an invitation to Eddie Lange to perform at the ISGC if room can be found in the schedule. Eddie is a fine young man playing some great steel guitar with a bright future!
On behalf of the NE IA Steel Guitar Jam, we thank everyone for their kind words and support. In particular, we want to say thanks to all 29 of the artists who performed during the two-day event and helped make it a success! Attendance was the largest ever! And I must also mention their were many positive comments from participants who attended Doug's E9/C6 seminar. All in all, it was a 'hoot'! ...Lefty [This message was edited by Lefty Schrage on 27 February 2002 at 12:56 PM.] |

Sounds like you all had a great time. Sorry I couldn't make it down to the show. One of these times, I'm just going to take the weekend off and come down for a visit. I couldn't do it this time because our band is working on a TV show for Charter Media for the 5 state area. We did some taping and I had to be here for that.
Congrats, to Eddie! The Kid plays fine! Wait 'til he gets a few more years under his pak-a-seat.

I would like to compliment all of the players and support folks who participated in the Waterloo show, and most of all Lefty, Craig and Dale who have put together a great weekend for everyone who attends over the years. Now that the shaking has subsided somewhat, I would also like to thank these guys for allowing me to set up on their stage for the first time with a Steel in an enviornment like that. Not quite sure what it takes to rid ones self of the uncontrollable shaking. Kind of like the very first time on stage some 30 years ago. Any way, thanks so much for the great weekend and all the help and support you all provide for us (younger)?? players.

I had a great time playing there this year. Thanks to Lefty Dale and Craig for asking. Mark, I think my shaking stopped just this week. The jam was fantastic an the Jerngan seminar was great! Had breakfast Saturday AM with Doug and he is as great a human being as he is a musician. Keith, you did a great job! It was great to hear you and meet you. Might be interested in one of those pedals one of these days.
Dennis, Have you seen my teeth? Missing my dental floss too.

Kirk, I am still trying to figure out how to play "Greensleeves" with a 4/4 shuffle. The last two years your band started with that tune and it really sounded good. I had worked some on "Sally Goodin" and "Lost Indian",for the show, but didn't have the nerve to do them in with the medley of Old Joe Clark and Cotton Eyed Joe. Kirk, your Father came up to me, complemented my playing and said, "Nothing bothers you, you seemed really relaxed". I admire the band your Father had, and the music your Father played for years. As you know I was playing with Dennis Detweiler's band. Dennis is mighty lucky to have a band that good. They made the music feel good. |

Keith,
We have a big family up here in Iowa! The Detweilers, Kelchens, Klofts, Morris', Hofers, Cadys, Dightons, its all one. You won't find better people anywhere! We have a great time making music and I think we are all in it for the right reason, the love of the music. Take care and come see us. FYI-If you want, I'll send you a tape of our version of Greensleeves, it's really not a trade secret.

Kirk, Next time we meet, we'll have to try Greensleeves in the original key of A minor. First I'm gonna try some of Kieths' tuning fluid. I also think I found your floss. Someone must have secretly woven it together and now it resembles a thong. Zumthing fishey is going on Well...Back to the woodshed fo a while |

A word of advise, Mark, contrary to what some may think, drinking tuning fluid won't help your playing or tuning. I didn't have a drop of tuning fluid before I went on stage. |

Roger Miller is the only guy I know that has strange uses for floss!
We're getting too old and forgetful to drink before the gig. Too many notes and arrangements to remember.
Anyway...tuning fluid and thongs were used by the Marines (Keith and Mark) I was Army |

Dennis, you nailed that one, yes, I was in the U.S. Marines. Kirk, I would love a copy of the way your group does "Greensleeves". If it is on a recording, I would be happy to send payment for it. |

Hey Dale, Tell ya what. We are having our annual jam at my place on August 3rd. Hamburgers on the grill etc and play for about 5 hours. This started out as our wedding anniversary party which is in October, 5 years ago, but too cold to jam in the garage in October. My wife always said, "It'll be a cold day when I marry you......." Oh well. You're all welcome to come down to little old Troy Mills Iowa on August 3rd and sit in. Gonna have to build a bigger garage.
