| HMMMM???? I did the NAVY thing a few years back, luckly I had a good experience (non music). The only problem is if you don't dig the gig "YOU CAN'T QUIT!!!", there will always be dishes to wash and ships to paint to fulfill your enlistment. BE CAREFUL ON THIS ONE!!!! |

I looked over the information about this on the Navy Band webpage. There's audition information and a link to a page about the actual band this gig is for, Country Current.

The only thing it doesn't tell you is whether or not you actually have to enlist to get the gig. Apparently anyone can audition. They'll send you music to prepare for the auditions, which are scheduled next summer.

Of course you have to enlist to get this gig....it is a military musical organization.
It requires Navy Boot Camp as well. The only thing it doesn't require is any type of additional Music Schooling (called "A" school)
The gig starts of at the Pay grade of E-6 1st Class Petty Officer. Approx 28-30K a yr if you are not married and have no military experience.
It is a good gig...I have called and researched it....I plan to audition for it.. sometime and we will see how it goes. I just like to play and play with guys who can play...it just makes it easier to communicate musically. When you work out "in the civilian world" so many times you can't talk technical with a lot of players like you can with a pro outfit like the Navy Band. I don't know how many times I have played with a good drummer.... but he couldn't follow a countoff!
I played with the US Army Band as a guitarist and sometimes as steel guitarist for 10 yrs.
Would be nice to pick again full time and travel.
The US Navy Band "Country Current" frequently appears on the same stage with the likes of Brooks and Dunn, Grand Ol Opry, Ricky Skaggs, and many other National Acts.
In addition they have a "sub group" of the Country Current - a bluegrass group. They do all the big festivals and boy are they bluegrass monsters!!
Their last drummer is now the drummer for LONESTAR.
But, you have to be between 17 and (I think 34) join the US Navy for at least 4 years AND meet height and weight standards AND pass a TOP SECRET SECURITY CLEARANCE that allows you to perform at the White House. If you have a 'tainted' past this will be a challenge.
As said before, the US Navy Band is a FINE organization, in demand worldwide - You must hear to believe!

While I was teaching, a country Navy band from Memphis played at our high school. I had a chance to talk to the steel player however I don't remember his name. They were very entertaining and professional. A friend of mine who later became head of Capitol and United Artists here in Nashville went on tour in Germany when he was in the Air Force.
Thumbs Carlisle was on the same tour. |
