Okay all you swingin' dicks out there... I need your inspiration!

I was in a recording situation the other day and the tune called for a steel solo. So I thought, "What should I play?" (sound familiar?) Then I thought of all the very talented members of this forum… What might more experienced steel pickers play?? (me? 3.5 years) So I thought it would be great to ask all of you talented cats to chime in with your ideas… This “challenge” is just for fun, no ones stuff will ever be used for anything (‘cause it’s already done with my lame steel solo (see below)).

So here’s the challenge… (it might be more of a technical challenge than an artistic one).
(1) Listen/Download the solo part of the recording at http://www.davidhorch.com/music/solo-challenge.mp3
(2) Load this into your favorite playback/recording device and dream up a great solo.
(3) Record your solo and post it on this forum in some way!
(4) Comment: This is all in mp3 format so don’t expect high fidelity!

I would sure love to hear what you folks come up with!

GO FOR IT!! LET’S HEAR YOUR IDEAS! Perhaps we can all learn something.

Hmm… Since I started this “challenge”, I guess I have to share my extremely lame performance. You can find it at http://www.davidhorch.com/music/solo-challenge-my-try.mp3

Best as always, -Dave

Thanks Bobby! That's what I tried to do, but couldn't get it right. I will attempt to edit with the %20's. I should have known better!

So, Do you have any good ideas for a solo?

Best, -Dave

I’m starting to think that this whole notion of sharing in this fashion may not work on today’s internet. Why?... If you don't have some sort of high speed internet access (DSL or cable modem) you can't really play this game effectively.

The file I put up for consideration may be too big to download for most folks. I could dither it back to a lower bit rate, but I thought that would ruin the party for those that wanted to participate due to fidelity loss.

Perhaps in a few years, as broadband technology advances, this sort of "collaboration" might be possible for everyone. Until then, I'm still looking for solo ideas for this tune!!

Best, -Dave

Hi Dave, I listened and I think what you played was very appropriate for the song, short solo, simplistic and it fits. Most important, it was on pitch !

Good job..

Didn't see a thing in the world wrong with it.

It was on time, pitch, and it moved right along with the flow of the song.

Keep up the good work.

I finally think I found a better (and free) way to post my MP3 attempt at a solo on this tune. I rather enjoyed doing this. It is just fun to see what different people come up with.

Here it goes...
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/thedoghouse634

If it doesn't stream correctly for you, just right click on the name of the file (Solo Challenge) and save as... to download the file.

Thanks for listening,

David Spires

Every solo for me is a challenge!

I'd agree that it sounds completely fine and appropriate. Keep steelin'!

BTW, I just have a modem and your little clip came down in about a minute, not too bad.

Again to Dave Spires: I really thought your solo was absolutely awesome! Now I want to figure out how you played it! Thanks for sharing your musicianship and taking the time to chime in! Did you get the C pedal into it? (my guess). Very musical and flowing, into and out of the solo. Nice! Very Nice! - Best, Dave Horch
