Jewel on SNL.. steel player?

Post by BobG »

I saw the 25 anniversay show for "Saturday
Night Live" and was wondering if anyone knows
who played steel with Jewel during her performance of "Who will save your soul".
Whoever it was he did an outstanding job.
The steel was also "way out front" in the mix.

It may have been Ben Keith. He produced a few of her albums, this is only a guess.

Don't know the answer to your question but I've got one on the same subject and the answer may be the same for both. I've been curious who played for her on the MTV unplugged show. MTV2 had an "unplugged" marathon a few weeks ago and I happened to catch part of her show. Looked like the guy was playing a Remington pedal steel. Never got a good close look at it, but the logo resembled mine.

Same subject: Does anyone know who played steel on Billy and the Beaters (SP???) on a song I think was called: If I Could Hold You Just One More Time. It made the charts and got a lot of air play. The steel was prominent but it wasn't country.

"Skunk" Baxter played on Billy Vera's album. Several other cuts on that CD have lots of steel.

Bruce Kaphan once played with Jewel on Saturday Night Live. I did not see the show you speak of so I can't swear it was him. He is excellent and diverse player.
[This message was edited by David Phillips on 17 January 2002 at 06:34 PM.]

Talked to Ben Keith, last week. He was to have some eye surgery, on the tenth, of This month. He only lives about 5 miles, from me. I'd planned to go over, and see how it came off.
P.S. He DID, produce Jewels first album.

Buddy Buddy: If the opportunity presents itself, would you ask Ben if he ever played the GI Circuit in Europe with Faron Young. In the early to mid 60s, France and Germany.
If he did than we crossed paths back then and I'm trying to remember the name of the lead guitarist who was with them. What a helluva pair of pickers they were. Giants in their own time !! Image Image Image

Paul, I think both Odell Martin and Wayne Moss played for Faron around that time. Do those names ring a bell?

I asked Greg Leisz about that gig and he told me that by mistake both he and Bruce Kaphan were hired. Bruce played pedalsteel and Greg played a bit of dobro.
I think this is the Jewel gig that you were asking about.

Herb: Exactly right !! Odell Martin !! Man could he ever play those hoe-downs. Some of
the things he did were hard to believe. Faron would brag on him one way or another but he just go on and play anyhow. Later, back in the states we played shows with them in NC at the Daniel Boone Park and we had the middle of the front row reserved for our band so we could get up close and watch him play. Perhaps the only time my attention was more focused on the lead man than the steel man. To be painfully honest with you, I'm not even sure of who the steel player was with Faron in NC. That's why I was asking about Ben Keith in Europe; I'm pretty sure he was on steel on those tours.
Any current word about Odell nowadays ??

Paul
I was only around Odell twice; the first time was 1977 at Carnegie Hall, when I was with Alvin Crow and Odell was playing lead for Tillis (with Terry Bethel, Hoot Hester, and Jim Buchanan... good band!). The second and last time was in 1979 at the Palomino Club in N. Hollywood, at the "going away" party for Jimmy Bryant. Haven't seen him since. But what a monster guitar picker!

Odell Martin was killed in a car crash a few years ago.
