BE live '77 -- WOW.

I'm sorry, I know this is old hat to almost everyone but me and has come up on the Forum before, BUT.... I just got Buddy Emmons live at the ISGC '77 for Christmas, and all I can say is...WOW.

Is there any other player who simultaneously integrates the entire history of steel with the most cutting edge sounds out there? The stuff he plays on "Mardi Gras" and "The Great Stream" is mind blowing. And to think I was listening to Mahavishnu Orchestra during those years, and didn't know about this....

Dirk, it may be old hat, but it's clearly a Stetson! I was able to see Buddy play several times around that same time and I am greatful that I changed my musical direction in time to see and hear the BIG E play . I still listen to tapes I have of Buddy playing live in 77 and 78. It still blows my mind !
Better late than not at all !

By the way I also saw John McGlaughin and his group play several times. I think they also would have cancelled a gig or two to see Buddy play, if they only knew....

The Mahavishnu Orchestra??? Yes Dirk...a good many of us were listening to the wrong things in the late '70s, and in the '60s, and the '50s, and the '80s and '90s as well. And that includes music!

Mahavishu Orchestra - great stuff. I bought all their albums at the time & thought that John McCloughlin was the business. I learned a few of the riffs off 'Inner Mountain Flame' but could never get close to his speed of playing.
Around the same time (1974?) , a guitarist in one of the local bands got a PSG. I think it was a D-10. I had never seen one and I went over during a break in the gig and strummed the strings. It made a weird noise. I remember thinking that you would need to be some kind of genius ever to get a tune out of something that complicated.

Mahavishnu was a pretensious group with all the pseudo-religious trappings... but McLaughlin could play, and a few of the things they did were innovative and exciting. I recall a cut called "Dance of the Maya" that inter-weaved some interesting themes.

I count myself lucky to have also been at that amazing show in '77. The bad news is that was the LAST time I got to the convention- I've been gigging somewhere every year ever since. I remember I had just seen the movie "Once Upon a Time In The West" and how blown away I was by Buddy's ebow interpretation of the female vocal line on the theme. I swear I can hear me howling in the crowd on the CD...what a Masterful performance from a true master. Thanks Buddy...

Bob Maickel wrote a review on our Vibrato Records recent release of Buddy Emmons with Jazz Piano legend Rob Mullins "Live in Denver 1982" that it is the best live recording of Buddy ever-WOW !!!
