A steel player friend from the mid 1960's
E-Mailed me since i joined the forum.
Leon Sweatman from Trion,Ga. It was worth
joining to hear from him. we.re going to
meet half way for a meal.(Don't know who
will pay!) My short tenure with Stoney
Cooper in 55' 3 tours in Canada, and outdoors
fairs in Pa. and NY, The band was Woody
Woodham bass and comedian,Gene Merritt fidel,
and Bob King solo and RCA recording artist
from Canada. I have seen Gene at Opra Land
with His band, but does anyone know the
wherabouts of Woody or Bob King.
Woody was from Columbus,O. The last I new
he went into mil. and performed in the
special services.

I was in the army with Woody in Atlanta. He got out late 1960 or very early 1961. He went back on the road with Wilma Lee and Stoney for a while. They came to Atlanta shortly after he went back to work with them and he called me and I went to see the show.
A couple months after that, I was shipped off to France.

Woody decided to go back in the army and he also ended up in France as did "Pappy" Burns, who had been the NCOIC of the Circle A Wranglers. "Pappy" got us together for a few shows in France.

The last time I saw Woody was backstage at the Opry in the late 70's. He had retired from the army and was visiting in Nashville.

Charles,
You can e-mail Gene Merritts at, pap-e@webtv.net . Gene & I worked together in the mid '50's,up in Mass, before he went w/ Wilma Lee & Stony. In fact,I coulda had the job playin' Dobro w/ them, but I had one more year of high school to go,('55) & my mom wouldn't let me go. Maybe Gene can direct you to Woody. I think he (Woody),still lives in the NashVILE area.
