<FONT SIZE=-1>Rayman: I had not heard of him, either, before Al Brisco introduced him to us a few years ago.
Here's what Al Brisco has on his web site about Steve Smith.
And, here is some more info on Steve Smith . . .
As you'll see, he's probably MUCH better known in Canada although he has played the Grand Ole Opry many times in the past.
Many folks referred to him as something like a hidden treasure when they heard him play at St. Louis in 1999.
Steve Smith began playing pedal steel guitar at age 15 while living in Europe with his family.
Later, he played with a Canadian band,
and was picked up very quickly by an American group, the "Western Rainbows".
Steve's playing intrigued so many that after he returned to Canada, another steel player, Jack Calhoun, invited him to Florida.
While he taught Jack how to play the steel guitar, Steve played on "The Grand Ole Opry", backing up numerous stars.
Since his return to Canada, Steve has played with many different groups, appeared in several TV shows, including 5 years on Ronnie Prophet's TV show.
Steve then had his own band for a few years.
After that, he went on tour with Carroll Baker for 8 years, followed by a stint with Tommy Hunter (a 26-year Canadian TV star).
Steve still tours with Tommy Hunter every January all across Canada.
In between times, he does recording sessions with many artists, also TV Commercials.
More recently, Steve toured with Shania Twin.
But the highlight of his career so far was and is, in Steve's own words:
"playing the I.S.G.C. (St. Louis) Convention in August 1999 in St. Louis and my Carter Steel Guitar!"
Hope that helps introduce him to you a bit . . .

I've been listening to Steve Smith play for almost 30 years, starting out in the bars in Toronto in the early to mid seventies. He has tone and taste to die for and that's after comparing him to all my American idols and friends. Check out his performance on our "Northen Steel" CD to get an idea of this guys musical taste and feel.
