George Edwards played the "Kitty Wells Show" for the past 25-26 years, untill they retired last year. Their "Farewell" show was broadcast live on WSM-AM that night.

George is a true PRO with the Pedal Steel,both necks. A super person and I am proud to say he's one of the best and nices gentlemen I've ever meet. We were in Branson,MO when the "Kitty Wells" show played there a couple of years ago. After the show,(about 12:30 A.M.)He meet with me and my wife at one of the local donut shops. we talked and I got to pick his brain on the steel for almost 2 hours. He is really one of the un-sung heros of the PSG.

Shot Jackson was playing steel for Roy Acuff in 1960, He came to my house for dinner in Tucson, Az. that year, when He & Roy did a show at the University of Arizona, also 14yr.old Brenda Lee was on that show, Shot was playing a Single Neck Sho-Bud! Also, Shot had just converted my Sho-Bud#3 to a D-9 & the fond memories just go On&On!

Question for Bobbe or anyone who might know -was Stu Basore playing for the Kitty Wells Show as late as 1967? Another thread on the Forum asked about the first professional steel player a person ever saw "live". Whoever was playing for Kitty in 1967 was the first steel player I saw in person. He was rather slim, wore eyeglasses and had a pompadour hairstyle (didn't everyone in 1967?).

I was still in high school and went on a date to a concert featuring Kitty, Johnny Wright, Bobby Wright, Bill Phillips, Grandpa Jones, and the Possum himself, George Jones. Kitty's steel player was the highlight of the entire show - above everything else (with the possible exception of the young lady who accompanied me). He sure made some terrific music on pedal steel - and I think got me started thinking I would someday want to play one of those things. Still trying to learn how.

Stu!! Answer this guy!!
Stu was not playing for Kitty in '67, he had been with Ray Price and was starting to do a lot of in "town work" in '67.(sessions, T.V.,live playing, etc.) Stu was and is the best friend a steel player could ever have.(and me too). He got me my start in Gnashville as I have said many times before.
Shot played for Acuff and Kitty all through the Late '50's and very early '60's. Shot did about all the early recording with her, I believe this is what the question is refering to. George Edwards didn't work with her 'till he finished his Hank Jr. stint and the Farron Young tours in the mid '60's,'70's. Don't forget, Russ Hicks replaced Stu Basore with Kitty,He also knows what a fretboard is.
History buff,cuz I wuz there.

As long as we're talking late 60's, I recall going to a Connie Smith concert in 1968 in Connecticut and she had a young, strikingly handsome steel player who played great but had an ill-advised choice for guitar, a Sho~Bud Crossover. Any idea who that might have been?

Bobbe! If you recall, Dale Wagner was with Connie in Early 69, Then I was with her for a few mos, & You followed me, correct me if I'm wrong! I know that she didn't play a lot of shows that year! au
Herb! when I left Nashville that year to return to Mn. I picked up my Crossover from David Jackson & left him with a PP, Now! what da ya think of that! au

Earl, you're right, it was 1969! I was just giggin Bobb-ster a little bit.

Al, regarding your trade, let me toss in mine. In 1967 I bought a 1957 Strat from Sol Betnun's Music in H'wood for $160. I came back from Connecticut in mid-69 and needed an amp, so I traded Sol the Stratocaster back, plus $150 for a Twin Reverb.

Looking at the fact that the Strat would be now worth about $10K, I think your trade isn't such a monumental error!

In June of 65 Kitty and family came to Tulare CA and Stu was playing what was my first glimpse of an Emmons because we lived in Twilight Zone America and also saw knee levers on a steel for the first time and went home stunned. It was exceptionally cold for that time of the year and I felt sorry for the muscians because their hands were cold and it was a tough gig but I loved it, Gary

Warren Frid, don't worry about contradicting me, I love it! I think he was right at the end of his "Kitty days" in '67 however,Guess I'll have to call that rascal again and see if his memory is any better. What a guy,Stu is the king, one of the most under rated steelers ever. Never would have amounted to anything without Marsha though! Ha!

Herb, Yes, that strikingly, overly handsome,brilliant, great steel player with Connie was none other than the person I love most in the world,(ME).Is this where we first met? How do you remember this event? This is where I hired the great guitar player, Rocky Stone.

Yes, I was playing a totally custom built Sho-Bud , 6-5 baldwin "crossover". It weighed more than my car, but it really did sound good. I think I was also using a Fender Twin with a 15" Lansing speaker. Am I correct?
Herb, you have a memory like one of those big grey things,you know, the thing with the trunk in the front?
Tell me more about this ill fated tour I was on! What were YOU doing in Ct.?

Earl, Gary was not playing for Connie in '68,Gary replaced me with her in the later spring of '69. I'm not real positive when the other guys worked with her, however, I am positive when I worked with her as I still have my "session book" noting all my work from January of '69 'till today.
Earl Erb, This is the time when we first met, I believe. I was totally impressed with your great playing at this time. I think I had just left Connie and had just started with Stonewall Jackson at the time. Possibly still playing the afore mentioned Sho-Bud. I went to Emmons soon after meeting you. See, you impressed me, as you did many others, and still do!
