Post by Ricky Davis »

Well we are playing the Grand Ole Opry again; but at the Ryman this time....Fri & Sat night(21st&22nd)Don't know if we get a TV slot again yet. But here is the deal. I'm taking myself a little road trip starting this Sat.(15th)...gunna visit Mom and Dad and Brothers..etc...But I will be getting into Nashville Tuesday evening(18th); and I want to go where to go and hang where to hang. So any Suggestions??? Who's pickin' when and where? Who needs a picker(I'll have my rig with me)..when and where.
Of course I'm coming to see the new store Bobbe.....so keep the light on...and are you open Wed...and Thurs. of that week?? I never ever get to come there and hang or meet all you guys from that town....so I'm gunna do it this time. Hey Kevin O or Tommy W...if your reading this...I'd like to go say hey to "The Man"..(LG); but I'm too shy...ha....can ya hook me up?
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone; but I just don't know where to go....."YET"... Image Image Image Image
I will have computer with; and e-mail and travel phone are updated.....ha..LOL

Ricky, you would be way ahead of yourself if you got in touch with the "Nashville Ambassador" Smiley Roberts. He knows all the right telephone polls to pee on and EVERYONE in Nashville knows him including the Mayor, the Governor, the Senator, the former Vice President's wife and a host of unmentionables Image! I'm not sure about that LG fellow you mentioned but I'm sure if you could hum a few bars of it, Smiley could play it on his dobro! Image

Hi Ricky,

Let me know if there are any cool Steel Guitar get-togethers, or anything else for that matter. I am hanging around with not much to do this winter, but loving it all the same.

Well I did talk to Smiley and we are gunna talk more when he gets home this evening. I just got home from a "Day with Lloyd Green"...Wow...what a day.
WE went over to see Bobbe's new store and looks great Bobbe..then we three went to lunch..
Bobbe has some great steels there guys and more to come so look for the update on the Steel Guitar Nashville website.
Then Lloyd took me over to his house for the rest of the day.....Man that Lloyd Green has the keenist memory and what a historian and overall treat to talk to. He is soooo uplifting to talk with and you just can't meet a more giving sweeter guy on the whole planet.
I just learned so much history and philosophy of our great instrument and that was only 5 hours worth....and it would take a 1000 more hours to learn all that he knows.
Then we went down to play his ShoBud LDG..the original one that he has had since '73 and has recorded on more albulms than anything ever...ah...ha......and I got to play it....allthough it is quite a instrument to play the way it's set up..ha....but he has no problem whatsoever with it...ha....LOL
He is playing better than ever and look for some great things out of this "young" man in the near future.
Well my life is over....and I have met my all time Idol....and he even signed the bottom of my Pro II.
So I'm heading down to Legends to hear(at least 3 people have told me) John Hughey play with some guy down there.
Then this Friday we will be on the Opry at the Ryman at 8:30 central time and Sat night at 8:30 and 11:30 central time.
So tune in on wsmonline or go to opry.com and they have links to liste to the opry live on there.
My week has been super great so far.
Tony.....I'm not coming to Australia...I'm sorry pal....I would love to play the steel festival.....but I'm just recently divorced and going through to life changing times emotionally and carrer wise....so I have to stay home for a while and work through it.
See yall.

Wow<<<<<. Thats Great Ricky, It sounds like you had a great day with "THE MAN"<<<. Yes you are right he has forgot more about the music industry than most of us will ever know. What a world of knowledge.
I had a similar day back in March of 1998 when I spent a few hours with Lloyd and Dot at there home. I had a ball!!!!!!!.
I have a awsome story I would love to share with you. I had been talking with Lloyd previous to going to Nashville in 1998. I had expressed how much I would love to buy some of his original LP's and could not find them in Colorado anywhere. He said all he had was his own personal copies, and sorry he could not help me.
Well that ain't the end of the story, a very close friend of mine and Lloyd's Leslie Elliott, Ron's wife, asked me to call Lloyd when I got to Nashville. I did and he asked are you coming over, well of course I said YES<<<<<.I got there my wife and I and we were having some soda at his kitchen table and he said "Wait just a minute" he left and came right back with about 12 of his original albums held up like a fan and said "Is this what you are looking for???" Well I about freaked out, I said "Yes of course, but where did you get the extra copies???" well he said that when these were new he would send them to his parents in Alabama, and he and sister came accross them the other day, and he could not think of anyone who wanted them more than me.
So I have Lloyd's parents copies of his LP's.
To say the least, it is a "TRUE HONOR" and he signed everyone. And ""NO"" they are not for sale for any amount of money. If you ever get a chance to meet Lloyd and his wonderful wife Dot you will see what Ricky and I mean, they are very special folks<<<. I just thought I would share that story with Ricky and you all. Take care and Merry Christmas to everyone, I hope to see you at the 2002 ISGA. What a great time this year was!!!!

If you all want to see the Sho-Bud ,Ricky is talking about go to the Sho-Bud website and look at the Sho-Bud of the month, wow what an instrument with such history.

Little Brother:
In case you hadn't already guessed it, Red is the one and the same, who along with Lloyd, provided the names of the steel players to a lot of the clips on our site, as well as a lot of the material that has Lloyd playing the intros, breaks etc. He also has a fine CD of his own out called "IN HIGH GEAR", with liner notes by Lloyd.

Sounds like you're having a great time! I know where you're at emotionally as I am going thru something very similar right now. Even told my teacher a couple days ago my 2 Fulawka's were going up for sale along with everything else. Just really don't have a lot of interest in much these days.

Will be listening to you this weekend on the net, since, in it's wisdom, Canadian CMT doesn't see fit to carry the Opry. "Break a Leg"!!

Talk at ya later.

Red that is a tremendous story pal. Thanks for sharing that; and thanks for all you have done to contribute to the "Rebel and Ricky" site.
Actually Lloyd has been over looking at that site quite often; and has some names of steel players that aren't correct and some that aren't there that he knows of. We had plans to sit down at his computer and take notes on a bunch of that...but it slipped our minds. I will try and get him to e-mail those to me.
"Big Brother"...I feel for ya pal. But don't sell the Fulawka's...sell what ever else but those my friend. Lemme know if ya wanna talk when I get back home and we can sob together over the phone. Try to keep your chin up as I'm trying to.....sometimes a good long cry is what the doctor ordered.
Ok everyone check us out in just one more day on the Opry....listen to the Opry live online fri. night on wsm radio broadcast of the show and we play at 8:30 central....then sat night at 8:30 and 11:30.

Hi Rebel and Ricky, thanks for the kind words.
Thanks so much Rebel for the cool write up on my CD, and I was so honored when Lloyd did the liner notes.
Too all you folks that have not been to Rebel and Ricky's website its a must, great steel intros and breaks from the 50's to the present, by the original players.
Like, Lloyd,Hal,Weldon,Buddy,John,Tom,Sonny,Paul and a host of other top players in country music. If you have any other cool intros or breaks make sure you get them to Rebel.
I am glad you liked the story, it means alot to me.
