Newbie Introduction

Greetings from the great state of Alabama!
I am a newbie player about to take my first lesson. (in other words, as we say in Alabama...green as a gourd).

I know absolutely nothing yet, so any and all advice, knowledge, words of wisdom,etc. will be greatly appreciated.

FYI, I am a transplant from the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum and I am glad to say it was instrumental in striking up my interest in pedal steel. (gee, I wonder who's fault that is?..)

Welcome to this board Bryan. I am really tickled that The Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum has enticed at least one person to give pedal steel a try. We have several folks from this forum who post on TUMGF, but I believe you are the first to come this way.
You will find many helpful folks here. All of them play better than me...lol

I was a newbie about 13 months ago, still am for that matter. I know you will enjoy and gain a lot from the forum. b0b runs a great show!!
My family is from the small town of Titus, AL. I spent most of my youth summers on the farm. Sure beat the city life of Los Angeles.

Welcome Brian,
I would have your instructor give you some scales to run. Single string and double. And every time you sit down to your steel, spend at leeeast five minutes working on then. Make sure you come back down the neck on the scale because that's when your hand kind of covers the frets and you have to rely on memorey and ear just how far five frets are.

And when you've been at It a year, your playing will be as good as you can run those scales.

Welcome to a wonderful resource!

I just took up steel a little over a year ago and joined the forum then. I've learned so much here from this wonderful bunch of individuals. You can believe almost everything you read here.

I hope your experiences with the steel are as satisfying as mine have been. What a wonderful instrument. Stick with it. You'll be surprised in how far you can come in a year's time

Hey, Welcome to the fold Bryan ..Although I have only been a forum member a few months myself, the many new friends I have come to know thru EMAIL and posts have made my journey back to Steel very informative, a whole lot of fun and did I say expensive?
3 months ago I didn't own a Steel, now I have two D10's, a Nashville 400, a new volume pedal, a new Steel seat..BUT, I wouldn't have it any other way. Through the forum I have met a local player who has brought me to a show in SC and a local jam session which has gotten me hooked up with a small group here in my area who jam weekly and play out as well..Never would have made my return without the Forum...
Glad to be here..
My only advice, dig down deep for the determination to stick with it...The screetchin', the sour notes, the out of tune pedals..your family complaining..your favorite animal refusing to acknowledge you..It all goes away..Even Buddy had to start from the beginning !!...Best of Luck

i discovered it here a couple of years ago and have'nt left since !
Many of the vets here wished that a Forum like this one was around when they got started.

the advice i'll give ya' is:
you're going to have be real patient + arduous upon your venture in Steelin'
but as Time moves on and if you have stuck to it, you'll hear the progress.

Welcome Bryan! I've been playing steel professionally since 1950.... Most of it I've had to dig out on my own.
Since discovering the Forum just 3-4 years
ago, I've found it to be one of the finest panels of musicians one could ever hope to find.
All are knowledgeable, even "EXPERT", and more importantly, ALL are willing to share what they have WITH YOU!
Thanx to b0b, the price is right! Thanks to the participating Forumites, you couldn't find a more pleasant and informative place to hang out. A knowledge base on steel guitar that is unequalled!
A word of WARNING however: Once you find out how much you don't yet know, you might have a tendancy to acquire every new discovery that comes your way. This can drive you into bankruptcy, so, stop, look, listen and then make wise choices based on a broad base of newly acquired knowledge.

I'm originally from Alabama myself, but have been living in Mississippi the past 14 years.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. You'll learn a lot, meet some interesting folks, and Bobbe Seymour too.

I don't think you'll find a better bunch of folks than steel guitarists anywhere online.
