Steelers do it with pedals and levers. ... Nope. How about:

Well, Gentleman, it's time for the new guy to say something. As a 22 year old college student (Texas A&M), I'd say y'all are just about right on the money. Working as a bar-back or a bouncer, they'll do ANYTHING to get back and hang out in the green room with the band. The dumb girls go for the easy ones, the lead, the rhythm, and the bass.

But nevertheless, in my defense, I think the words of the great Bobby Bare say it best. "I've never gone to bed with an ugly woman, but I've sure woke up with a few."

I'm looking forward to learning to play the pedal steel, and I think I've got enough lead in my pencil to take care of whichever leftovers get thrown my way. You fight the fights you can win.

So, rest assured that there ARE a few kids out there that still want the challenge of playing an instrument that put country music on the map, regardless of what it does to our social lives.

Thanks for your time and loads of information. Best case I'll be into a steel by May. Any suggestions are more than welcome.

our friends abroad are most likely tucked snug in their beds, while visions of sho-buds dance 'round in their heads. They're 6 hours ahead of us, give or take, which puts them at 3 AM or so...

Weeeell...back when I was a young man, and before I was married, there was as much there as you handle. I played lead guitar, but best as I can remember, It didn't matter what you played.

After we were all married, and our wife's sat In a booth by the bandstand, they were still around trying. I've seen some fine looking women pick up some not so fine looking pickers.

Ray, here in Finland even we steel players get our share of action. At least I myself have a loyal supporter who never fails to stand right on front of me and each time I take a solo she lets out a growl: " Yeeaaah, gimme more of that slider!!!. I'd be more than excited, if she wasn't twice as old as my mom and didn't have a face of a pitbull!

A similar quote used frequently by Faron Young....."I've never seen an ugly woman in my life...but I've seen a few that just barely made it".

You know the kind, the ones that came down to the club in order to over-come the lonelies while their spouse was out tromping thro' the woods in his camoflage suit, killing deer, elk or other of God's little critters with his latest canon.

So thats where my wife went while I was out hunting!!!!

Then I played Bass,I guess thats all it took.I was really lucky,anyway I'm way too old now and very married.

Michael, Michael, my young and inexperienced friend, flee now while you still have the chance. DO NOT begin to play the steel. If you want a musical challenge and a social life, learn to play the fiddle. I'm dead serious - if I were kidding I'd be peppering this post with those smiley faces.
As a fiddle player you'll get work all the time, get to strut up and down the stage and wave your bow at the lovelies, and plug right into the PA and never have to carry tons of heavy junk. Meanwhile the steel player will be sitting there like a jamoke with a sore back and blue ba!!$
Another truism: the steel guitarist can play the most brilliant fills and solos and the audience will yawn. But let the fiddle player saw out a bunch of rudimentary licks and the crowd will stand on their chairs, scream and whistle.

I would say bass players--they only have to play 4 notes per bar and they have a lotta time to check things out. Re girls getting prettier at closing time, i knew one guy whose philosophy was --not to have the best looking women in the place, but find an average looking woman and make her feel like she was the best looking woman--he had a good success rate.

All the comments are interesting, but my story didn't turn out to well. I only had two occasion that I can speak of. The first was an old gal who was hanging around the bandstand and I was last leaving. Her mouth was so big when she smiled she got lipstick on both her ears..but what the heck it was late. The other one was a barroom rosie..looked great at 2am. When I woke up, she was laying on my arm and was so ugly, I gnawed my arm off to keep from wakeing her up,and I haven't played steel since. Tough with one arm....guess being last had its down side.

Gene; You got that right !! Been there, done that and to tell you the truth, after 40 years, it never changes. My current Front Man (won't call him a lead because I have a lot of friends.....) is the perfect example. Now he has to get glasses and didn't even know he was going blind. That may explain some of encounters !!

Having played lead guitar and steel guitar professionally for many years I can say (at least in my case) I got more tush when I was standing up playing guitar in my tight jeans for sure. In a couple of bands where I played only steel I didn't do near as well except one group which was kind of an Acid Country band where I put a bumber sticker Blackie Taylor gave me which said "Steel Players Slide In Smoother". You'd be suprised to see how many chicks came up with a big old smile on their face and asked if that was true. I just had to demonstrate it.

Most of the interesting things that have happened to me in my life, I attribute to myself being a Steel Guitar Picker. You know, sweet innocense, shy, quiet, a friendly tho' elusive smile, a dapper-dan kinda dresser, looked good in the band uniform, the down to earth boy next door kinda guy, (almost virginal), eye-flirting etc.
Several years ago, I had a custom license plate frame made for my rig. As you know, these are small and have very little space for lots of words.
I had mine read: "Steel Guitarists SLIDE into the "G" Spot".......
I was simply amazed at how many times my attention was drawn to my outside rearview mirror where upon I'd observe one or more attractive ladies obviously reading the rear license plate frame message and then when they'd go by they were wearing gigantic grins and their sparkling eyes told the story.
Oh well......back to my music room...
