going to Maui on Sat, 9/8--steel players??

Post by Chris Walke »

Anyone steelers performing in Maui 9/8-9/16?

Honeymoonin' on Maui. We'll be looking for some nice places to drink a cool beverage and listen to some steel guitar... (Well, I'LL be looking for some steel guitar. I don't think it's quite as high on her priority list)

The gratuitous suggestion would be to see where Don Ho is performing. Seems like he's always somewhere at one of the major resorts in the Kanapali area (?). Years ago, Wayne Hobbs worked with him while he was stationed there with the military. Not sure who's playing now, but I'm sure he has a steel player.

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association web site has a list of who's playing where on the Islands.

Henry Allen is featured at Flemings On The Green in Kapalua on Wednesday through Saturday, 7:00-9:00 PM.

The "Old Lahaina Luau" steel lineup: Ross Ka'a'a Mondays and Fridays; Ralph Melemai Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays; Sam Ako on Thursdays. 505 Front Street, Lahaina, 5:15-8:45 pm

Owana Salazar plays steel (Rickenbacher frying pan) accompanying George Kahumoku Jr. at the Maui Weston at Ka'anapali Beach several nights a week. Sorry, we don't have the schedule, yet.

Be sure to check out Tropical Disc Records, a great store with lots of Hawaiian CDs.

Have a great time!

Last time I saw Owana, she was playing a JB Frypan, (8 strings). I really doubt she is playing a Rickenbacker Frypan, (with only 6 strings). She studied from Jerry and plays very well on steel, plus slack key and she is one helluva vocalist!
