Mr. Sandman

No one can make play "Mr. Sandman" as well as Chet Atkins. This tune and "Spanish Fandango" are my favorites of his recordings.

I find this tune very difficult to play on a steel guitar. "Mr. Sandman" is a simple melody; but I can't fit it to the sound of a steel guitar (maybe I have Chet Atkin's sound fixed in my head).

Does anyone know of a recording of "Mr. Sandman" played on steel guitar?

Bobby Garrett did it on one of his last albums. "My Best to You" I think is the tittle. Its also probably the very best version I've heard on the Steel. Good luck!

Bobby Garrett's version is without a doubt the BEST steel guitar version ever! What else could be expected from the "King of the Thumb Style"! Check out Bobby's version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" with his thumb style that Bobbe Seymour attempted in St. Louis. I was a little surprised he didn't mention Bobby Garrett's first thumb style version when he played it. Another of my favorites is "Booger Man" and Bobby's 1996 version of "Streel Guitar Rag"!

I've played "Mr Sandman" plenty of times but not in the thumb style. I'm not that talented. It seems to lay very well on the E9th neck with standard pulls.

You can contact Lee Brothers at lee9a6@aol.com or (618)684-3802 in Murphysboro IL He has a recording of it that is real good !! It was engineered by the late Gary Hogue In Norris studio in the Dalas area. BTW Lee worked for Bobby Garret in Rose City when Bobby had a music store. Needless to say it would be hard to determine which of the two was playing. Norris Family Music in Mesguite Tx. probably has a copy of it. It would be worth the dime!!
