Smiley & Me

Post by Mike Jones »

Had a chance Sat. night to go set in with friends of mine at a club called Homeplate Lounge on Nolensville Rd. The band that has the house gig are all old time road cats, Jimmy Hyde, Rick Boyer, Jack Daniels, Jim Unger, Dennis Payne. All great players and they have great arrangments. I got there, unload my guitar and sat it up. A little later Smiley came in and brought his guitar in. So he and I played steel together for the rest of the night. I had a great time, Russ Hick and his lovely wife came in and sat in along with Timmy Atwood & Dianne Jordan. Smiley played really good and I thought back to the Deemans Den days when we would have more steel players setting in than audience. My thanks to Jerry Braswell for gettng alot of the old players together. Love ya Smiles,

Mike;
Sounds like a great time to me! Image
What ever happened to Jack Moulette? Last I heard he moved back to Detroit to be a carpenter. Great guitar player! (For those that don't know him, he used to work with ET and Barbara Mandrell. Image)

Hi Mike,
I was there with Russ & Laney, sorry I didn,t get a chance to talk to you. You are right, it was a real treat to hear you, Smiley Image, and all the "older players". The best gig I've seen in many years. Truly traditional country music. Image Image

Regards,
Bob

Hey Ernie,
Jack is missed in Nashville. Last I heard he's moved back to Detroit.
It would be great to hear from him. Theresa

Theresa;
In the mid-80's we played a place down there called "Andy Jack's". Jack would come in and set in the front row. We'd talk and he'd set in, (every night.) He said then, that he thought he should go back home. I guess he did.

Mike;
I was only in Deemans Den a few times, but I miss those days. Heavy pickin' by the heavyweights, side by side.

Glad You mentioned Dennis Payne one of Nashvilles best kept secrets and I wonder why?Singer, songwriter,musician and one of the best pair of ears one could put on tne board in any studio.Smiley has always been a greatly underated player.Up at the Mass Bash he quieted down the room and the bar was empty when he did his thing. Hey Cookie, sounds like you had a great time, wish I could have been there also. If you get out there again please tell my old buddy Rick Boyer "hello". Also give my best to Russ and Laney. Take care my friend, hope to see you real soon.
