Here's a 1:1 comparison of E13 & C6/A7 ... (lo to hi):

E13 ... D E G# B C# E

C6/A7 ... C# E G A C E

I'll make it short and sweet ...

For me ... so many harmony combinations are built around the top two strings (my melody strings) ... on the C6/A7 tunin' ...

It makes this my favorite tunin' by far.

Granted ... a proficiency in reverse slanting is needed to take advantage of string one combos ...

But once you "have it" ... its all there ...

As far as having the C# ... instead of the C ... on the bottom ...

The dominant 7th chords available on strings 3,4,5 & 6 ... far outweighs having the root C down there ... for me ...

Plus you get that cool "Octave" Min 3rd/Maj 3rd forward slant run (for lack of a better name) ... much cooler sounding than the standard "octave" run.

Anyway ... thats about the best I can do ... hope you found these 1:1 comparisons useful.

I will put these all together and put them on my site ... for future reference.

E6/C#7 works well also (E13 tuning mentioned above with 3rd added above, 7th at bottom eliminated, and low E string sharped):

G#
E
C#
B
G#
F

Has the goodies of C6/A7 but in a different range and timbre.

BTW, I wonder why it's B11 and not A6/B9 when C6/A7 is not something like A7#9?

Different strokes (strings) for different folks. Learn to play in many tunings.

It's hard to beat the 'old' Jerry Byrd book for learning the variations of basic tunings and how they are related to each.

Thanx,
Jim

Jim ... I agree.

I wasn't tryin' to "beat it" ... ... just use a different approach to "explain it" ...

Thanks for putting all of this together. As someone who is branching out from open G, I appreciate the thought you've put into this.
