What's the best tuning for a lap steel and why? My pedal is an S10 (E9). Thanks. |

The one you understand best.
Oh, and "it depends."
Seriously though, there is no "best" tuning, and if you browse past threads--including one just down the page called "E13 tuning"--you'll see that even the most popular tunings have lots of variations to fit personal taste.

P.S. Edit to add that although there's no best tuning, it is probably possible to list criteria that are personally important, such as rhythm capability, or range, or maximum number of voicings without slants, or whatever, and to design a tuning based on whichever of those criteria are most essential for your playing.[This message was edited by Travis Bernhardt on 28 February 2005 at 10:12 PM.] |

I would recommend a 6th tuning.

That tuning was recommended to me by Herb Remington. |

When I eventually get my T–10, E9/13 will be one of my tunings:
E–B–D–E–F#–G#–B–C#–E–G# You can play it as E13 or E6. I think it's quite versatile!
