I would like to get a single neck eight string.
I currently have a double eight Fender Custom('49), and a triple eight long scale Fender Stringmaster('54).
I love both of these guitars, but find myself playing more and more on just one neck all the time.
So I think I would rather just get a single neck so I don't have to carry around all that extra wood and hardware.
I would like something with a nice big sound, like the custom has, and something that has the feel of the stringmaster(I like the scale and string spacing on it).
I'm up for any suggestions years and models of other Fender's or of other brands.
What should I look for. |

Not until you've eaten all the spinach on your plate!
Check out the Harmos if you have a chance. You can get Stringmaster type pu's in them. It's real light, the string spacing is comfortable, and all around, a quality guitar.

HowardR,
Thanks, but I think I may be a little to old fashion for the Harmos.
John,
I saw the Georgeboard on ebay, however once you add shipping and legs then your over $900.
I could find an old stringmaster for that much, or make something myself. I'm leaning more towards making one.
Thanks so far though.

Check out the Musician's Friend catalog, they have the Little Roy Wiggins model by Morrell I believe for under $300 which is a pretty good guitar I've heard....JH

Being on the hunt for an eight stringer myself, here's my thought:
I was looking into getting the bottom-dollar Roy Wiggins guitar until I read this thread:
http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum2/HTML/003077.html
Seems that the issues are: too-tight string spacing, low-output pickup, crappy bridge.
Those are all things I could address with some additional cash, but if I have additional cash, I want to get a better guitar in the first place!
So as for the old ones, I'm combing the forum trying to find out what the "good years" are for Fender S-8s, and others. I'm really glad we have such knowledgable folks here to warn against the bad ones.

I already have a Little Roy Wiggins model.
I sit around at home and play on it some, but I don't care for the scale and the string spacing.
Ron,
I have that stringmaster thats on ebay in my watch. If it would stay around that price it is right now I would go for it.
Mark,
Thanks for the email. It looks very promising, and it's around my price range. |

you could modify the Little Roy. Different spacing isok as the neck is wide enough.
Rout string grooves in head for clearance, george L or Truetone pickup, new bone nut and taipiece needs change, maybe strat hardtail parts...
Little Roy pickup is ghastly stock, too narrow. |

I heaven't heard "The Playboy", which is the lower priced model steel made by Herb Remington, but I know it's high quality if it comes from Herb. It looks like the same pickups that he uses in the Steelmasters. I'd really like to try one.
I would recommend that over the Morrell. You would have to make too many changes and adjustments to the Morrell before it could be considered "on Par" with the better class of guitars. Too much trouble, IMHO.
I would really, really like to try a Georgeboard, too. The vol and tone knobs are nearer to the pinky, which would be a plus if you didn't have a volume pedal with you.
Looks like both can be obtained for around $600. A good price for a quality instrument! [This message was edited by Jeff Strouse on 18 February 2005 at 08:30 PM.] |

There's a new GeorgeBoards on eBay now with a BIN price of $550. You can't get more guitar for the money than that.

I'd consider one of Mark's kits. I've looked at his posts several times. It looks like quality material, and it appears that you can have some latitude to set them up the way you want. Worth considering IMHO. |
