I picked up a 6 string Fouke Industrial Lap Steel off of Ebay this last fall and I love it. It is the "Rail" model and it has an Armstrong humbucking pickup with a coil tap which gives it a broad spectrum of tone. This is my first lap steel so I can't say how it compares to other lap steels, but I get compliments about how good it sounds at every gig I take it to. I tune it to C6 and I have played it on some Country gigs and a "Jam Band" gig where I have have played it on some Blues and Raggae music.

I've sold quite a few through my little steel store, and I think they're great, original, different axes. Being hollow and solid aluminum they have a distinct tone and response. I've had Chris make me a number of them with string height, spacing and setup to mimic a typical reso guitar, and they're just great with an open G tuning. Very eye-catching as well. Try one, I bet you'll love it!

Mark, how/are the hollow bodies significantly different than the solids?

Is there enuf sound from the hollows to practice/play privately by?

What would you possibly compare their distinctive sound to, and do you think it would be possitively enhanced by a Rick/Lollar type of horseshoe PU?

What do they weigh in at?

Thanx!
