About a year ago I had a student who owned one of these. As I recall the sound was pretty dull to my ears (others may perceive it as "warm" though) and the output was somewhere between a standard single coil and a P90.
All according to my not so perfect memory...

I don't know about the impedance, Bill, but I've sold a couple of those new Gretchs and they don't really impress me. Nice looking but kind of cheesy close up. Sort of like the new Fender reissues... |

It's a shame that both Fender and Gretsch did not step up to the plate and build a product worthy of their past legacy. [This message was edited by Gary Lynch on 24 December 2006 at 06:17 AM.] |

I tried a Gretch in a store when they first came out. It felt like the pickup was sort of OK, nothing special. What bugged me was how sloppy the setup was, with strings really narrow where they didn't have to be, and I think one spacing was off. It looked to me it would be playable but would need some work. Not near the guitar you can get for half the price in a vintage Valco product or Silvertone/ Airline.
I tried the new fender lap and felt the same way about it, but I thought the pickup was worse. Too bad they don't seem to have their heart in it.

I've heard the same things about the new Fender and the Gretsch laps.
What about the new GoldTone "Oahu" lap steels? I guess I'll do a search here first on past opinions, but maybe there are some new opinions on those, especially that new 8-string version.
How are the pickups, spacing, components, workmanship, etc. -- OK?

The Goldtone Oahu is, I think, a pretty good value for the money. They look and feel solid, with a particularly nice case. again, it's the pickup where you get let down, and maybe a slightly more cheesy vibe to the overall build quality. When compared to an original rope binding Tonemaster, they seem like a "paler imitation". But definitely worth the money. |
