The idea of putting little LED position markers has come up many times on the Forum.

But what about a fretboard made of cellulose with a dim light underneath, so that you can see what you're doing when they turn the house lights down ?

I've heard that Mr. Piburn over at Georgeboards is doing this.

Speaking of which, I have a George Piburn lap steel, and I found that the frets did not show up too well in subdued lighting, what with the wood being quite a light colour and the frets being etched into the plastic, so I got a piece of black paper exactly matching the dimensions of the plastic and slid it under the fretboard. The result was quite remarkable the frets are easily visible in low lighting now. I even put little numbers on the frets,(those stick-on numbers out of v.c.r.packs)to help me keep in tune!!!
