Tenayo Whiteborn? (Weissenborn)

Post by Bruno Rasmussen »

Does anyone here know these Chinese Weissenborn type instruments? 489 Euro only - ($ 645 approx.) http://www.musik-schmidt.de/osc-schmidt/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=19894

Review in issue 10.2006 of German magazine ‘Gitarre&Bass’. Very positive on tone and quality. Only complaint, poor tuners.

They look nearly identical to the GoldTones.

Is that a wooden nut?
Looks 100% identical to the Clearwater weissenstuffs that's offered regularly on eBay.
Probably the same factory that's producing them under various names, like the Artisan lap steels where you see a lot of identical ones wearing other names.

I'd rather wait and see if I could find a used Superior Hawaiian if I were you Bruno (or even better, a used Lazy River or Celtic Cross).

Hello Steinar
Pierre (of Vintage Show) put my attention to this because of the very positive review it got in that German magazine. I’m not thinking of buying one. I know where to get a very nice used Lazy River Image- but the cash situation unfortunately doesn’t allow that - hmm

I recently did a bit of homework prior to purchasing a weiss style instrument, I have tried the Clearwater, it sounded as good if not better than the goldtone solid top at twice the price. For the money they are very good and with some tweaking could have the bass response improved. THe wooden nut is an easy fix. I eventually found a 2nd hand Pete Howlett solid mahogany instrument which I am delighted with.
[This message was edited by Kevin Brown on 15 December 2006 at 01:12 AM.]

And what is wrong with the wooden nut? It gives a great mellow sound. Try one first before you go and change it out.

Thanx,
Jim

Thanks for pointing that out Jim on some I saw the nut needed re spacing, also the material was a little soft for my liking.
[This message was edited by Kevin Brown on 16 December 2006 at 05:13 AM.]
