received via email: quote: Hello,
When you search in google for : George de Fretes you wil find a website : George de Fretes de ongekroonde koning van de Hawaiian guitar. Take that one it has a lot of photo's .He was born in 1921 and died in L.A. in 1981 and rest besides Soll Hoopii They have the same tombstone and people who knew everything about Hawaiian Music overhere claimed he was ten times better than Hoopii. George was a very modest man and his band (The Royal Hawaiian Minstrels excist for more than 60 years) He was the uncrowned King of the Hawaiian Guitar from Indonesia, Holland and Germany and also very famous in Japan On this websites you can see photo's and a discographie.
I had the honour to see him play and that was a sensation! He did not look for a moment at his fingers or instrument but look at his audience and I never heard someone playing faster.
He music is divided on 65 LP's which you can see on the discography. He made recordings in several countries and in 7 different languages.
Kind regards,
Jean Thomassen

Fascinating web site...if only I was bright enough to read Dutch ! Sure would be nice were someone to translate those pages into English. Obviously he had a great career ! I notice he is playing a MOTS 6 string National product in a few of those pics. |

I really like his playing on the few tunes I have of him. He sure could jazz it up. |

George was good, but his student outshone him by far , --- he revered Sol Ho,opi,i --- his biggest influence , and I doubt anyone who has listened to both would begin to compare their respective talents.
