Paul -- I believe it's a 1984 Dobro E-45. Dobro had a couple of electric lap steel models in the 30s and early 40s, then OMI/OAI added the E-45 in the late 1970s. They were available in 6, 7, 8 and 10 strings.

(just make sure you unplug it first)
Actually, these lap steels were distributed to the navy to be used in lifeboats as paddles in the event of shipwrecks

Thank you Russ. The extent of your knowledge, as always, is very much appreciated.
Of course I appreciate everybody else's comedy, too.
Jon - as regards the esthetics, I agree. It almost makes me queasy to look at that thing. Not too surprising they weren't a runaway best seller. But there is the retro "1930's moderne" element in that profile. If it were appointed with all the other trappings of art deco sensibility, I bet it would look really cool.
