Can anybody shed some light on this weird instrument?
Ebay #3774097229
Was this a regular thing that I have just somehow never heard of? |

Paul -- I believe it's a 1984 Dobro E-45. Dobro had a couple of electric lap steel models in the 30s and early 40s, then OMI/OAI added the E-45 in the late 1970s. They were available in 6, 7, 8 and 10 strings.

I've never seen one, but it looks like Bill Lawrence Humbucker pickup on there. |

Man, that really is oddly proportioned. Yes, form follows function but it looks like that was designed by someone who was tone-deaf to style. |

C'mon guys,
That's the built in stand!
(just make sure you unplug it first)
Actually, these lap steels were distributed to the navy to be used in lifeboats as paddles in the event of shipwrecks

Thank you Russ. The extent of your knowledge, as always, is very much appreciated.
Of course I appreciate everybody else's comedy, too.
Jon - as regards the esthetics, I agree. It almost makes me queasy to look at that thing. Not too surprising they weren't a runaway best seller. But there is the retro "1930's moderne" element in that profile. If it were appointed with all the other trappings of art deco sensibility, I bet it would look really cool. Very strange.[This message was edited by Paul Arntson on 13 January 2005 at 11:52 AM.] |

It might sound really good, though. Isn't that solid mahogany? I would have bid if it had legs. |

All kidding aside, I like the way it looks.
But then again, I tend to lean towards the strange and twisted....
