That store Replay is a great place.
A couple years ago I bought a Magnatone D8 there very reasonable. I guess I'm lucky they hadn't discovered ebay back then...

| The auction kind of makes you feel sad for Marie the original owner of the guitars and amp on Ebay. she must have bought them when she was pretty young. has anyone ever heard her play? anyway, I hope she comes out good on the deal |

I was teaching steel guitar and piano at a music store in
Spokane during the earlty 50's ( Thue & Blessing Music).
The store was good enough to sell me a 4-neck at whosale ( 1/2 off retail). Like a big dummy, I sold it and
bought a Fender 2000. I can't remember for sure, but I
believe it was to a "Marie" somehing. Can't help thinking that this could be my old Fender quad. Oh, what a sap

Wow... $7800!! Of course, it's in Mint condition, and it's a very early Quad. There aren't many in world like this, if any.
Vintage Fender guitar prices are driving up the prices of Fender steel guitars. An Ex+ 1954 Strat has a current book value of $100,000. An Ex+ '52 Tele has a book value of $65,000. So maybe $7800 for this super clean Quad should not be surprising?

The buyer is a 15 year old guy. He's an avid steel guitar enthusiast, as you might discern from his eBay handle. He has collected a number of nice vintage steels over the last year or so, and this Quad should be the crown jewel of his collection.
That was some intense bidding war. I was thinking of putting in a bid at the last second, but nowhere near that final figure.
So congrats Joe - as soon as you pay for it, you got yourself a Quad!

| Yeah it takes Two to Tango! The top two bidders battled it out from $3750 in the last six minutes. I am sure Marie is sad to see her Quad go at any price though. |

| Maybe his parents are wealthy (or he is)? The money was better spent on a fine rare steel than video games or an off road vehicle in my opinion and/or other items most 15 year olds dream of. If he is a prodigy, then he probably had coaxing from his teachers. Although most of us probably hate to admit it, compared to old Fender guitars, the steel guitar is a great bargain at today's prices. Five or ten years from now we may be saying to each other, "I could have purchased a mint Stringmaster single 8 for only $1000!" I just checked out the links to the other auctions (ended) provided by Alvin above . . .
His guesstimations were very close for the triple 8 custom and tweed super.
In the real world, his estimate of $3,765 should probably have been close as well. But when talking about the rarity of a one owner and well cared for quad, and ebay bidding wars, all bets are off.
Good for Marie and congratulations to the young man who won it. Who knows, we could all be hearing it on his recordings in the future. |

| Unless I did not take notice correctly, the triple was not a duel pickup steel. I assumed the Stringmasters with the duel pickups are commanding the highest values at this time. Often we forget values of yesterday can change. The older I get I find myself saying things like, "No way is that house worth that much" or "$35,000 for a pickup truck! I use to only pay $12,000!" |

| Just to let you all know that the 15 year old boy that you think purchased the quad stringmaster has backed out of the bid. Said he bid on "accident". Pretty irritating that he ran the bid up so high. Makes you wonder if his bid of $5599.99 was real also. Probably should have gone to 2nd bidder for around $3800.00. |

How does one find out that "the kid" backed out of the bid? Are other bidders contacted or is there a back door to seeing transactions on Ebay? I'm a Ebay novice but do watch sometimes and was amazed at the $7,800.

| If you respond to the sellers 'questions' link he will get back to you. He emailed me stating they are in the process of making a decision to relist or ? I assume they will relist. More buyers know about this piece now and I'm sure will get additional attention. A number of scenarios are possible. |

I believe that only the seller knows those details. Once the auction has ended no more information about the transaction is made public, as far as I know.
eBay has very strict rules about 'backing out' of a bid. In this case they might kick the kid off of eBay.
The seller may send a 'Second Chance Offer' to the second highest bidder. That's usually easier than running the auction all over again.

| a lot of twist and turns to this auction. people will remember the steel named Marie for quite a while. I do have a question concerning Ebay auctions. Is it legal for minors to place bids? are they legally bound to pay for what they bid on? It's a shame for the other bidders and the seller that this sort of thing happens |
