Howdy !

I was toying around with my Framus 8 string lap steel. I had in mind the kind of sound Don Herron gets on the BR549 records, and was looking for a tuning to match it.

I've found this one :
from low to high :

F A F A C D F A

Would you think it's a useful tuning ?
How would you call it ?

Thanks !!!

Hi Victor

I would spell it

I III I III V VI I III
F A F A C D F A

for an F6
It is quite strumable, but is missing a few voicing possiblities.
But no, it's not stupid, it resembles a few bluesier lapsteel tunings, Ben Harper comes to mind.

If it were me I might try

V VII I III V VI I II
C Eb F A C D F G or A III

A transposition and expansion of a tuning I have been using the last few days :

E13 Tuning:
B D E G# C# E I like it it's pretty cool. Wish I had 8 strings.

Check out Brad's page of Steel. http://www.well.com/user/wellvis/tuning.html

It's a good idea to plot the scale degrees of your tuning, As I did above.

And also at the 2nd 5th, 7th 9th fret up to fully understand what it can and CAN'T do for you.

For instance at fret 7, you have BOTH differeing degrees of your root scale,
AND the V7 of it too. So in C graph open as C = I but also do fret 7 as
what from Key C is there
and what from chord G7 is there too.

If your not getting some minors and good dom7s from your tuning you are likely missing useful things.

Eh, les bonne heures des blues.

I tweaked it a bit this AM.
It is now tuned

VI domVII I III V VII maj

C# D E G# B D#

also with minors up top, and tensions below
III bV #V I bIII V

Sitting under the V is a minor maj7 the IIIrd
I - III V VIImaj

Depending on your root it has intersting things

The minor is 4 frets back
The relative minor of V is over the I
The relative minor of II is over the V

it makes me think of Leavitt... maybe it is... didn't check..
