I can't remember what happened to the player I once had but I don't seem to have anything to play youtube videos that I save. I've found a bunch of downloadable players but I first want to see what anybody here has to say---what's good, safe and---oh yeah--free?

You can get vdownloader here http://tanbir.wordpress.com/2006/05/26/vdownloader-02-download-vide os-from-youtube-google-video-and-grinvi/
I've been using it for a while. Just paste the URL of the youtube page and the rest is automatic.

hey--thanks, Dave, but I've got a downloader. My problem is that when I try to play the flv files I've got nothing that will play them.

Jon -

Try this - - > link.

To the right of the 'Play' button is a link to download a player.

Jon,
The file I pointed you toward automatically converts the flv into a mpg or avi (you choose). You can play either with Windows Media Player or most any player. Are you saying that you don't have any such player.

Dave--that's a new wrinkle for me. All I've known is saving youtube files and manually changing the extension to .flv and playing them over flv players. Not having to manually change the extension is an improvement right up there with sliced bread. What you describe sounds even better. Right now Downloadhelper and the program Russ linked me to have my needs covered but I'll try to remember your post if the need arises.

Dave, I'd been using a flv. player and adding the flv extention to all the youtube files I downloaded but after using the downloader you linked to I've redownloaded all the videos I liked and converted them all to avi and couldn't be happier. What a cool program.
