Today I got a spam: Mortality F. Shrewdness, I didn't open it. I selected it, then clicked delete, it didn't do anything, I had the hourglass but nothing was happening. I went to the top right corner , got the cursor arrow, clicked close, then I got message, outlook express not responding.I got everything closed out, restarted the pc, tried it again , got the same results. How else can I delete this message? Dennis

You haven't told us what your email client is, so it's hard to give advice about deleting emails without that knowledge. Also, what is your Operating System and Service Pack level? Have you downloaded and applied all currently available Windows Updates? Did you have any other problems with emails prior to this one? Can you sign into your email account via a web browser, via your ISP or Web Hosting account, and delete it right off the mail server?

Inquiring minds want to know.

For example you could go to www.mail2web.com . You could do this from any computer anywhere. Type in you email address and password, then you can read your email, and delete pesky incoming email before it gets into your normal email program such as Outlook Express.

Thanks Earnest. That only shows e-mail before it is downloaded. Dennis

Dennis;
Since I use Outlook Express to send and receive all of my email I looked up my old welcome message from sbcglobal.net and found a link in it labeled Email. When I clicked on it it redirected me to this login page. Upon logging in I am able to do whatever I want with my sbcglobal email. Click on the link and login using your sbc user account and password, which is the same as the login for your DSL modem, and/or SBC DSL software. Yahoo handles SBC and ATT Email.

Dennis;
My last message was intended to take you to Yahoo, where you are at least able to look at any email that remains on the actual email server. Did you look in the Deleted Folder while you were logged in? That email might be hung up trying to get emptied from the Deleted folder. Try again using your browser.

If that fails you will need to apply some tricks to the files that actually comprise your Outlook Express Inbox, Deleted, Sent or personal Folders. But, before going to that trouble, try rebooing into Safe Mode-With Networking, into the same identity that you use for online browsing and email. Once Safe Mode stabilizes try opening Outlook Express and see if that message is still visible. Try deleting it in Safe Mode. Let me know if happiness occurs. Also, if possible, before anything else, try to set Outlook Express to not check for new messages upon opening.

Are you using the Preview Pane in OE? If so, close it. Then right-click on the message and see if you can delete it with the Delete Key on your keyboard. This still sounds like the message is still on the server, trying to get deleted via Outlook Express. Log back into Yahoo and look in the Deleted Items folder to see if that message is listed in there. If so, try to Empty the Deleted Items folder.

Dennis,

Instead of highlighting the message, try rightclicking it, then delete.

If OE is hanging, you might have an event in control panel / administration tools / event viewer that could be helpful for diagnosing the problem.

Also, there's a passive viewer built right into Outlook Express. You can use it to view any email message because it doesn't do anything beyond displaying the characters in the message, it doesn't run anything.

Rightclick the message in your inbox message list. Select properties. Click 'Message Source' in the message properties box. A window will open that shows the message addressing information, then the message text. It should be plain english text, if it isn't it could be malicious or corrupt. Either way, you should be able to delete it on a rightclick, without previewing it (which sounds like is what's hanging OE).

Thanks Wiz and Tom; It is too late to try what you suggested.I have a bigger problem. I moved all of the e-mails I wanted to keep to another folder.While doing that I received a new e-mail which I deleted, when I did, It automatically selected or highlighted the one remaining msg. Now as soon as I open oex it does not respond. Is it possible to un install oex then re-install? thanks. Dennis

Dennis;
I'll get back to you later today about deleting the database file for the Inbox. In the meantime, open any explorer window, like My Computer. Find the Tools menubar item and click on it, then select Folder Options from the flyout list. When Folder Options opens click on the View tab. You should make sure that the following are checked/unchecked:

  • Display the contents of System folders - Checked
  • Show hidden files and folders - Checked
  • Hide extensions of known file types - Unchecked

In the meanwhile you can read incoming or send outgoing email with your browser by logging into your Yahoo identity.

Dennis;
I'm back. What follows next will cause you to lose all messages that are in your Outlook Express Inbox. Use this solution only if Safe Mode (with Networking) has failed to allow you to safely remove the problematic email.

Make sure you have set the Folder Options to display Hidden Files and Folders and known extensions, as per my previous instructions. In addition, you may want to set the Folder Options to open new folders in the same window (at least for this drill-down). To do this, open Folder Options > General and select the Radio button option to Open each folder in the same window. Click Apply and OK.

Make sure that Outlook Express is closed. Go to Start > My Computer and double click the C: drive icon, to open it to a folder view. Double-click on the following sequence of folders:

  1. Documents And Settings
  2. (your login identity folder name)
  3. Local Settings (normally a hidden folder)
  4. Application Data
  5. Identities
  6. ( a long series of numbers and letters inside curly brackets {} )
  7. Microsoft
  8. Outlook Express

You should now be looking a folder view of the contents of your email identity. Find the files named Inbox.dbx and Deleted Items.dbx and delete them, or better yet, rename them (Inbox.dbx.bak and Deleted Items.dbx.bak). Acknowledge that you want to change the file extensions. This takes them and their contents out of the equation and a new Inbox and Deleted Items folder will be created the next time you open Outlook Express.

After renaming or deleting these two files try opening Outlook Express. If that spam message that is causing your problems has really been deleted off the Yahoo mail server you will get a blank inbox and Deleted Items.

Before doing anything else do this; From Outlook Express's Menubar click on Tools > Options > Maintenance Tab > Cleanup Button > Delete (Acknowledge the challenge notice), then Compact. Click OK to exit the Options unless you need to change your OE security (Open email in Restricted Sites Zone) (Do not allow attachments to be opened or saved...), or email checking options, then Click Apply and OK to close the Option. Check for email now. If that message is gone from the mail server you should have no further problems, unless you have incorrectly configured your OE security settings.

See my blog entry about configuring Outlook Express for more info about security. Be sure to read the extended comments as well.
