I usually perform a log off followed by a shutdown then turn off the monitor and go back upstairs. This morning the computer still diplayed the system shutting down screen, so it appears to not have shut down. The log off went well.

Hard to tell what happened. It was probably waiting for some application to shut down.

However, if it only happened one time I wouldn't get concerned.

What version of Windows do you have?

Sherman;
There are a few things that can cause Windows to hang while shutting down, like an application that is trying unsuccessfully to write data during the shutdown sequence, or not quitting when commanded to do so. It could be a corrupted driver, or exit sound file. In any case, you should schedule a chkdsk scan on the next bootup to fix any corruption in the filing table or in files that were in use during that bad shutdown.

Open My Computer, right click on your C drive icon and select Properties. Click on the Tools tab and then on the Check Now button, in the Error-checking section. Place a check in the first option - "Automatically fix file system errors." When you click Start a box will pop up asking you if you would like to schedule the disk check to run on the next bootup - click Yes or OK and reboot. Do not press any keys during bootup or you will cancel the chkdsk operation. When chkdsk has completed fixing errors it will exit and reboot the computer and start Windows normally.
