Topic: Can a DSL modem be tapped? |

If I'm not on the net but leave my modem on can someone tap an analog voice conversation through the modem? As a precaution I have always turned it off when making bank calls, etc. I just made a credit card purchase over the phone and after hanging up I realized I left the modem on. Am I just paranoid?

I serioiusly doubt it. The modem uses "digital" data transmission and must be sync'd to the ISP/Telco's modem.
Your are using "analog" on the voice phone. Actually someone could tap the voice phone much easier than the modem. |

Ok, yeah, there is a splitter before the modem. So I guess from that point only digital goes in to it. Just wondering if someone could skim off the signal by hacking the modem. But then, the modem itself has a firewall, I think. At least a security scan I did a few weeks back said so. Thanks.

No, you can't "tap" a phone through a cable or DSL modem, but phones are very easy to tap, nonetheless. In fact, an ordinary guitar pickup which is hooked to an amplifier and placed close to the phone will do the job quite nicely, even with no direct connection to the phone or phone line! 
In other words, never consider your phone "safe" from tapping. Where there's a will, there's a way. |
