This is such a little problem compared to the bigger ones out there, but thought I'd give it ashot.
Lately, when I right click any of my saved documents (word, excel, jpg, zip files, powerpoint) in the My Documents folder, the hour glass hangs for what seems a much longer time than it used to....maybe an extra 5 seconds!
Not a seriosu problem of course, but when I want to delete files one by one, it takes forever.
Other computers I have respond immediately to right clicking.
Any thoughts as to cause? |

You probably have too many memory intensive programs running, either in the foreground, or the background, or your computer has indexing turned on and is busily indexing itself while you are trying to work. You can do a three finger salute to find out what apps and processes are running (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and maybe find the one that is consuming the most resources (cpu cycles or memory).
The MSconfig utility will reveal all startup programs and services that run in the background. Goto Start > Run > type: Msconfig and press Enter.
Spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, backdoors, email spam relays and covert proxy servers running in the background can also cause these symptoms.
Another possible explanation might be too little RAM for the tasks your computer is trying to execute. See my RAM page for more info about this.
I often find that slowdowns occur over a long period of time, which makes them harder to troubleshoot. I suggest downloading or purchasing good anti virus and anti adware/spyware programs, update them and scan your computer for threats or active malware, then hopefully eradicate it.
If all security scans prove negative you can at least turn off Indexing of your hard drives, disable unnecessary startup programs (using msconfig), uninstall unwanted programs, run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary Internet and other temporary files that aren't needed anymore, then defragment. Also schedule chkdsk to run upon rebooting, to find and repair disk problems.

Thanks, Wiz. I went to msconfig, startup but couldn't tell which programs to uncheck.
I remember doing this once to another computer and unchecked the wrong programs and couldn't boot it up or some other disaster, so I deferred to my son, who went into the registry and got rid of a lot of programs that were running...it's fixed!
p.s.I have plenty of memory 1.5 gig, bought from Dell so it wasn't that. |
