My Windows XP keeps telling me that it has found new hardware. It is very annoying. Just keeps on popping up. I'd be quite happy to be install any hardware manually. Can I turn this automatic hardware detector off? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Either you have a driver that's been deleted, or you have installed something (intentionally or inadvertantly) that isn't complete. Device Manager is probably showing an exclamation point in the offending item. |

yes Ray, I found a string of "unknown device" in the device manager. I can't tell what they relate to so I've deleted them. I can reinstall whenever something doesn't function I guess. See if those pesky messages go away.

Well. My unknown devices are back in device manager. Popped up again next day along with the "found new hardware message." The only thing I've changed on here for a long time was putting on a USB hub. There was no software with it. Is this likely to be the problem? |

I've had a similar problem with my Tascam USB recorder. After installing it and actually using it OK, at later sessions Win XP would bug me about Found New HW. (Don't you like the way Windows will not accept No as an answer?) The "problem" was that all the USB ports are not the same on a PC in that one is the master and the others are hubs. With things like a mouse, there does not appear to be any problem moving to different USB ports. But it seems that other devices want to be on the master, or something like that. Of the four USB ports on my laptop, if I use one particular one, the problem does not surface.
So, you might want to try moving your hub to another USB port and see how that works out.
If that doesn't work and you remove the hub and still have the problem, you can use the System Tools to Restore your configuration to one before you began having this problem.
