While helping my dad reinstall xp on his Dell pc, I was talking with the tech support from India (was a bit hard to understand), and we had to go into DOS and write a new script to format Windows becuase we couldn't reinstall it any other way (I don't know why).

Is there a site one can go to to know what process to use should this ever be needed again (the procedure to do this)? Forgive me if I didn't explain this the right away.

What "script" did you do? It sounds like you just had to do an "F disk" then the format, as DOS does not recognize an NTFS formatted drive.

But, go to the Dell support forum, browse through the Windows XP software section. Reformatting, reinstalling, etc has been covered many times on there. It also depends on the model of the PC as to what has to be done to reload it - newer PC's have a recovery partition on the hard drive, older ones come with the CD's to restore it.

Here is the link to the Dell users support forum (It is mostly users helping users, not Dell support personnel) http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums
