Give me some tips.....
Scenario: You have just recorded a basic music track. On the drums you had mics on the snare, hihat, 3 toms, Kick and 2 overheads. Other tracks are acoustic g, bass g, Lead in stereo and keyboard in stereo. To do a 15 minute mix what would you do? Are there some things you would just go directly to and and do? Roll off frequencies on? On individual channels?
Master section adjustments? Compression? Rule of thumb....settings for music VS vocals?
Thanks guys......I need to step up a level on my mixing and any input is appreciated. |

first I need to know what your equipment is and what you have avialable. I never cut with eq or compression because you are stuck. Since I use the same drums all the time I try to get the eq set as close as possable. I use nuendo and I use insert eqs that way they dont go to tape or actually hard drive untill the mix. this puts you in the ballgame but you can change it a little. I do the same thing with vocals, I have a mackie uad card which I cant imagine doing without. I used to start with the vocal and start building everything around that, some people start with the kick but Ive changed a lot. You dont listen to everything soloed you listen to it all together. I think a lot of engineers have starting using the technique I do now. I bring everything up all at once and see how it works together and start makeing things work with each other. You have heard some of the things I mix at datstar well that is the way I have to do it there and I noticed my live mixs were almost sounding better than what I did in the studio. Get as close as you can when you are tracking and then the mix will go a lot faster but then bring everything up at once and go from there. without knowing your equipment that would be my best advice. If you are having to eq a lot you have the wrong mic or mic placement. about eq what you take out is a lot more important than what you add in never boost if you can cut and get the same effect
