You need a computer, which you obviously have. You need a CD burner. You need some software. The burner will come with software that will probably do most of what you want, but as you gain experience you might decide to get a program with more features. There are lots of programs available. And of course you need a stack of blank CDs. Then you just read the manual and do what it says.

If you have a burner built-in to your 'puter, and a recorder--four track, eight track?--you only need the most basic of capture software, like MusicMatch Jukebox. Mix the tunes onto the computer; make a playlist from your documents (or wherever you save them), burn it, et voila!

That is a very broad question. Exactly what do yo want to do? Make a standard Audio CD that can be played on any audio CD player or one that is an MP3 that can only be played on those that are MP3 compatible?

Do you want to make CD's from old vinyl or tape? Or do you wan to make a CD of you singing or playing?

Define exactly what you want to do and then someone can really help you. Also, if you are going to use a PC, do you have a CD "burner" in your PC?

A very basic (and limited) application would be a small mixer for the mic or a mic preamp of some type as a standard PA mic will not work with a PC because of it's low level output.

You can run your guitar amp's preamp out either to the mixer or direct to one side of the stereo "Line In" on your PC - and the mic to the other side of the Line In. That will give you two channels.

You will need a recording program that will record from the line in to the hard drive. Audacity is a free program that will do that.

Once you have whatever you want "recorded" to the hard drive as wav files (music files). You can than make an Audio CD.

This is a very basic and elementry system.

If you want more than that, you can talk to the people at the local music store. PC recording can be relatively simple or it can get very complex (and expensive).

I personally have a standalone hard drive recorder (a 16 track Fostex VF160) that I record with and then mixdown and "master" on the PC and then burn the CD's.
[This message was edited by Jack Stoner on 31 October 2005 at 02:52 PM.]

Gary, it's not me. I was just responding to the original post.

I know how to record. I'm also a (retired) computer support tech.

Go back and read the original post.
