'Cause everytime I do it creates a sign-on issue which requires me to run the SBC connection diagnostic tool. What a pain.

It's better to leave the modem on. With modem always on, there is no connection issues with the Telco's central office equipment and no connection issues between your PC and the modem. With the modem always on the line is always "captured".
I have my cable modem constantly powered on and also connected to my UPS system.

I had my first (non docsis) Motorola broadband modem turned on from 98 till 2001 and never shut it off unless the power went off and my next modem another Motorola (SB-5100) modem has been on since then they were made to be on 24/7 so don't worry about leaving it on they are micro-power and will not use 2 cents worth of power all month :-)but on the other hand you should be able to turn it off if you choose.

What is "the SBC connection diagnostic tool"?
Is that the old "SBC DSL Connection Manager" or newer "SBC Self Support Tool"?
I don't think it should be necessary to run those things.
You should be able to get what you need by typing or pasting 192.168.0.1 into your browser. Maybe you will be prompted to type in the number off the bottom of the modem, but you shouldn't have to do that more than once, because Windows will remember it.

Eric;
What model modem do you have?
Most of the modems from SpeedStream model 5100 and newer have an internal battery backup that stores your login details and connects automatically if you power down. I turn off my modem every night. When I turn it back on the next day it takes no more than two minutes to be logged in and stabilized, and often no more than one minute.
Another thing that you need to know is that SBC recommends leaving a new modem on for 10 days to establish the maximum throughput and sync rate. After the 10 days have elapsed you can turn the modem off and on at will. Every time you turn it off for more than one minute you will probably receive a new IP address.

My modem is SpeedStream 4100. I noticed it has all the codes underneath. I did keep my modem on for 10 days, although a few times I forgot and turned it off. My fastest test at cnet was 1150kps. When I download programs or songs my screen says anywhere from 125 to 325kps. I have no issue with speed or downtime. Today again I just signed on got a "wrong password" box. Had to run SBC Self Support Tool. It comunicates with my modem, says nothing is wrong, then lets me sign in. So I guess I will have to leave it on for convenience.

Erik;
I have a SpeedStream 5100 connected to a D-Link Di-604 router, which connects up to four computers to the Internet or each other. I turn my modem off every night and back on every morning. It always reconnects within one to 1 1/2 minutes. Do you have your user email account and password in the Login fields of the 4100, and is it configured to reconnect automatically and never disconnect?
If you are connected to a broadband router see if it will clone the MAC address of the NIC in your main computer. Some modems work better if they see the same MAC all the time.

so leave the modem on add a $49 router...
(wireless)
turn the router off each night if you must..
most routers now-a-days have a firewall anyway so you can leave the system on 24/7, which is what I do..
Each of us here should be using a quality Internet Security with Anti Virus and Anti Spam anyway..especially if you are trolling EBAY...
if you are not, turning the system off at night really does nothing for you anyway in the way of protection.
