Can anyone recommend a self-contained DVD player that is reasonably priced and *reliable*?

I bought a Panasonic for about $80 on line that works fine. DVD players are pretty standardized at this point. Even the cheapo ones seem to work fine. You might want to find one that plays CDs, mp3s and all that.

You mean non-computer related? I bought a Magnovox from Wal-mart for $36. It plays all the formats. I use it for my CD-Rs too. However, the stereo spread seems tobe a bit off. Appears to favor the right side. Experimented by switching speakers around.

DVD players are like most consumer items, "you get what you pay for". You can buy cheapies at Wal-Mart, that works, but not very well, or you can start going up the price scale.
The $100 to $150 range seems to have most of the bells and whistles and a reliable remote control. |

Based on the features, the price will vary but like other have posted, you should be able to get a decent, reliable player between $50-$100. Almost 2 years ago, I bought an inexpensive one at the time, a Daewoo DVG-5200S ($54) because it played the formats I needed, DVD, MP3, CD audio - though it doesn't have the progressive scan capability, which is basically related to video resolution quality. So far, it's worked OK. One very under-documented feature, that I discoved was that is has the capability to change the pitch of any audio format up or down in quartertones - it has a microphone input and level, and my guess it was intended as a sort of karaoke feature - anyway this works great for practicing tunes in different keys easily without changing the tempo. I'm not aware of any other players that have this feature - anybody know of any? If this one dies, I'd really like to have this feature again, not sure if they still sell this model.
