| My project to convert tapes and LPs to CD was interrupted by a CPU fan failure. I replaced the motherboard with a Mach Speed V881DAS with a VIA chipset KT880 and an AMD Sempron 2400+ cpu. Everything works fine as before except; the computer does not see nor hear the tape player. I’ve been through the book and the only thing I could find was disable the on-chip Sound because I’m still using my Creative SB Live! 5.1 Sound card. I have also tried plugging the TP into the mo-bd and enabling the on-chip sound, and any combination of the two. I have cleared every mute button I can find and I welcome your help, thanks, Al |

1. Confirm/verify that the tape player is putting out a signal to it's RCA jacks or plugs.
2. The input to the sound card will be a 1/8" miniature jack with tip and two rings. Make sure that cable is good at both ends.
Try a microphone input to the microphone input on the soundcard. A cheap PC mike can be bought at Wallyworld for peanuts if needed.
Does the PCI soundcard produce output?
Does "Device Manager" have any question marks about the sound device? |

| Adding to what Ray said, if you don't have a microphone to test it with, you could just plug a pair of headphones into the microphone jack and shout into them. The signal level isn't that great, but the transduction mechanism of a dynamic microphone and a speaker are exactly the same -- just excited from the opposite end of the system. |

Al, You didn't, say which operating system you are using. If it is XP, open windows volume control. Click "options" "properties" "record". Make sure you have selected "line in". Click "OK". Now you will see the recording level controls. Select "line". Now you can adjust the input level from "line in" from the sound card.
Be sure that you connected the audio signal to the "line in" jack with a stereo plug.
