Here's a satellite shot of San Francisco, courtesy of Google Maps. click here
Something looks really strange here. On the lower half of the picture, you see the south face of the buildings as expected. But above the center line, you see the north face of City Hall, the Federal Building, etc. It's like the map is actually two photos taken from different angles (above the equator & north pole?) and then spliced together.
At first I thought is was an optical illusion but the more I look at it the more I think something's fishy here.

Their photos can be old. Maybe you've found the seam between two taken at different times.
I don't know enough about SanFran to comment, but there's one I noticed in my area.
A new highway off-ramp just opened six weeks ago. (the Rte 6 South exit from Hwy 403)
The Google map shows the ramp as under construction. The paths are cleared but no road.
Also there is no snow, so it has to be from Fall 2004 or before.

I have jogged on Escobedo up to the fish market and back from the Oakland bridge and it is refreshing early in the AM!

Yup, you got it, it's a mosaic. There was an article recently that referred to the same phenomenon on Terraserver images. Shadows don't correspond. |

Man. How much area does that map cover? I went North till I got tired of clicking, tho I finally found the area of minimum resolution.
However, I do wish they had waited to take the picture untill that girl had put her bikini top back on. |
