I was invaded be all these adds and background add programs which brought my PC to a halt.I could barely get IE to run. These programs capture key words from Internet searches and link you to websites that use these words in advertising.

Virus and security programs for the most part do not deal with these background ADD prgrams. I do have Norton 2002 Virus/Security running full time and I was still invaded like the Locusts.

I downloaded the free SPYSWEEPER program from www.webroot.com , it found approx 79 add prgrams running and removed them all. It should be mentioned that I did run several of the other free download spyware programs and they didn't compare to this one.

The PC is now running at it's normal pace.

just a heads up..

Care to share what other programs you tried? Spybot S&D and Adware seem to be the gold standards....

Yes those were amoung the programs that WERE running in the background that did not prevent the attack of the "Killer" adds..

go figure.

I just ran the same SPYSWEEPER on my laptop and it found many on that little baby too..

It would not hurt to get the program and run it..

My daughter who is in Sales/support at Best Buy told me that when the GEEK Squad is called in to assist customers this is the program of choice now. They charge $79 to run it in folks homes.

good luck

Tony,

Spysweeper is fine, but it's not a free program. You can download a free, 30-day demo but if you want to keep it you'll have to pay $29.95.

Many of the 79 "programs" it claims to have found were likely not programs, but tracking cookies or privacy issues like Most Recently Used (MRU) lists. Some programs aggressively report minor annoyances as spyware in order to give the impression they're more powerful than other programs. I doubt that Ad-Aware or Spybot actually missed 79 real threats. Still, Spysweeper is a reputable product. I just don't think you need to spend $30 to get the same level of protection.

No single product catches everything. The holy trinity of Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spyware Blaster is still the most effective and is completely free. Well, that and turning off Active-X and getting rid of IE, as I mentioned in Fred's post.

Jeff..yes I know it's a 30 day trial.

I ran Adware and Spybot and the results were clearly not quite the same on my PC.

This program was pretty efficient for me.

My daughter owns a copy ..so..I guess I'll get it for free afterall..

thanks for your heads-up..
