to much stuff running

Post by jim milewski »

when I go to task manager the list is a mile long, and the pc is slow, exactly what needs to be running, I don't want to disable something that will cause the pc not to boot, is there a good utility to scan for unneeded programs and clean this thing up?

You might try this page on answersthatwork.com for some direction. And there's a similar page at blackviper.com, specifically for XP users. I've never used either site so I can't vouch for their usefulness, but they might get your started sorting through all those tasks.

You can also take a look at your taskbar tray and close any programs running there that you don't strickly need and then see what processes were closed in task manager. Might allow you to eliminate some programs that you don't need running all the time.

Also, here is yet another link to a web page that you might find helpful: http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm

Good Luck!

"Answers that Work" seems to really work! It may be a temporary situation, but I got rid of some things on startup like WinTools and my computer is working much better. Even got the Freecell game working again! One interesting thing was that although something called Rundll was reccommended to get rid of, my McAfee firewall reccommended letting it have access to the Internet. Anyone had any experiences with this?

go to your start menu, click on "run"
type in "msconfig"
click on "startup" tab
all you need running is SysTray.exe and Explorer(and Norton if you got it)
everything else is just slowing your computer down.

When you install an application program on a PC, one of the real annoyances is all of the extra junk that gets installed in the startup folder, the registry, and elswhere, that really gunks up the works. I even turn off the "autorun/autoplay" function to the CD drive. I don't want a CD to start until I ask it to. Several times I've had programs install themselves from the CD Drive when all I wanted to do was examine the disk contents.

Ray, you can hold down the Shift key when you insert a CD that you don't want to auto run. Image

Forget all the stuff above. Do the following.

1 Order or buy DriveImage 7
2 Reinstall Windows
3 Make an image of your new windows installation using DriveImage 7
4 Reinstall all your software and files - make another image after each program is installed
5 Enjoy you newly found speed until you encounter the problem again.
6 Use DriveImage to revert back to a fresh installation of your choice (remember you made images at every new program installation). It will take about 10 minutes to totally reinstal everything.

My pc was slow and I noticed all the stuff running with task manager. Most of it turned out to be spy & ad ware. I installed Spybot and Adaware and tigether they found about 185 files that needed deleting. My pc is much faster now.
