Computer not responding

I am running Windows XP Pro.. When I am on line, I get the little egg timer, just like when I am loading a program.. The only way out of what I am doing is to go to the corner & X myself out.. Then I get a box up that says the program is not responding, & I click on end now, then another box comes up & asks if I want to send a report to Microsoft, I click No, then I'm back to the Desk Top... And of course I lose where I was, & I have to start over again... Seems almost like something is trying to load..
I ran Spybot, Adaware, and Spyware Blaster, but it still happens at random.... John

Next time the computer hangs like that, hit Control-Alt-Delete to bring up the Windows Task Manager. Look at the Applications tab. One of the programs listed there will probably say "Not Responding". If none of them say "Not Responding" then look a the Processes tab and see if any process if using using a lot of your CPU cycles (more than 30%).

This isn't a solution -- just a way of getting some more information in order to narrow the problem down. If you post the application or process name, we might be able to offer other suggestions.

Do you have Windows Auto Update enabled? If so, it might be trying to download a large update file, unsuccesfully.

It sounds like it's trying to finish some download that was interupted, or some unwanted program trying to install itself.

Next time, go ahead and send the error report to Microsoft. Sometimes the option to select "More Info" appears, and will take you to a web page with at least a suggestion of what might be the problem.

Run defrag and check disk. Check disk used to be called SCAN DISK.
Go to MY COMPUTER,then click on your C drive,right click on PROPERTIES, then TOOLS,use the CHECK NOW BOX, then select the lower box. This operation will take place after you restart you're system, just follow the prompts. It will take a bit to run but may solve you're problem. If that doesn't help,try re-installing XP.

hi , thanks for your replies.. Yes I have Windows Update enabled... How do I disable it???
carl I will run a scan.. Will post my results..

Will, it just did that, & at the bottom of the tab it says...

CPU Usage 100%

All of your compute cycles are being utilized. To find out what program is doing this, hit Control-Alt-Delete next time the computer freezes. Near the top of the Windows Task Manager window that just popped up will be a tab labeled "Processes". Click on this tab and you will see a table of all the programs running on your computer. Find the row with the largest value in the CPU column. Copy down the Image Name value and CPU value for this row and post it to the forum. With that information I hopefully will be able to give suggestions on how to fix it.

OK, she just did it again..the following is what I got,
Task Manager... 09.........5,424K
P2P Networking.exe.....02.....5,656K
System......12.......216K
System Idle Process.........98...20K

Then the System Idle Process goes to 00, and the points manager.exe goes to 89, and they alternate between the two.. then points manager.exe goes to 00, & the System Idle Process goes to 98... but they are not both up at the same time... Hope this helps........... John

I'm kinda surprised your spyware scans did not remove the points manager.exe program, as it is a marketing tool and not something you probably want running. You should be able to uninstall it by going to the Control Panel (Start->Settings->Control Panel), click on "Add/Remove Programs", find "Peer Points" on the list, and click its "Remove" button.

Additionally, you may want to stop that P2P networking process unless you are currently trying to trying to trade music using Kazaa or something similar.
