I've been using netscape as my home page for 5 years. No problem. Now, within the last few days, after a few clicks to various sites I get popups to the point I can't get back to the subject I was after. I had to do a hot reboot and start again.
Anybody use netscape and have this problem? Is it something new with netscape?
I know about the popup stoppers, but due to a problem I had to delete them.
I am days away from receiving a hot souped up Dell computer so I don't want to spend a lot of time on this dinosaur.
In fact, that gives rise to the question of suggestions of best protective software, programs, etc I might add to my new baby. I'm willing to listen to your good advice. Thanx. |

You can try one of the new Mozilla browsers. They block pop-ups. www.mozilla.org
Also, if you're using the latest (6?) IE, you can install the Google toolbar, which also blocks pop-ups.

Hey Ken -
I quit using Netscape shortly after they became part of the AOL evil empire and went back to IE.
I'm with Carl on both of his suggestions. The latest version of the Mozilla browser (1.6) contains a pop-up blocker (Mozilla is the base code that Netscape uses) that is pretty effective - although you may have to turn it off for some on-line bank stuff.
There is a new small and fast browser you might like if you like to play with new code - FireFox 0.8 - also available on the Mozilla site.
The Google toolbar is wonderful - eliminates most pop-ups, no spyware components, and it just works.

Thanks all. I have downloaded google thru IE and will start using that for my opening page. All of my bookmarks in netscape went away when I loaded XP anyway.
My new Dell arrived today, but it's still in the boxes. Got to make room for it. I'm debating about even hooking it up to the net, what with virus's and cookies and popups and spyware and such. I bought it mainly for making digital music-(cakewalk and the like.)
I guess I'll hook it up to the house LAN, so it can talk to the other computers and get executable files when I might need them. My biggest fear is yanking my audigy2 platinum plus(ex) from this computer and getting it to work on the new one. I never could get it to work on this one since I went from Win 98 to XP.
Oh well, it's all a fun learning time anyway.
