Flying Windows ?

Post by Jody Carver »

Maybe someone can tell this illiterate pc guy
something.I opened up my Outlook Express this am and all at once,,a slew of windows came flying at me one after the other. I tried closing easch one down and as I did, more windows came in my face. They were coming at me like gangbusters,,one after one.
I didnt open any attachments.
I did a Virus scan and updated all my defintions which I do on a regular basis and yet I found no virus on my scan process.

Can anyone tell me "what happened"

Thank You..

It's been my experience that anti-virus software doesn't catch everything. Get Ad-Aware, Spywarescanner and Spywareblaster from www.downloads.com and you might find all sorts of nasty little things lurking on your hard drive. They're all free downloads.

Hi Jody

I'm presuming the windows you speak of were pop-up ads. You don't say what operating system you are using, but...

If you are using Windows 2000 or XP, navigate to Control Panel > Adminstrative Tools > Services. Look for a service called "Messenger" and disable it - that should take care of a lot of pop-up ads. Check out Pop-up Stopper (free) from Panicware.com to take care of the rest of them.

Ditto what Cal said about getting rid of adware. also check out Spybot Search and Destroy - another good adware cleaner and also free.

I love The Hot Club of America.

Best wishes,

Lou

I did what Cal suggested and I hope that does
the job..NO it was not pop ups..it was windows and windows like pages over each other and I couldnt get rid of them until I shut down. Never saw so many pages ,,almost as many as my looooong stories,,maybe someone
is getting even with me Image

I installed the $19.95 version so maybe they
got me I dont know,,but I do appreciate it.

Thank You Cal and Thank You Lou.

The HCOA is only a few weeks away from being released..Appreciate your kind words. Now if I could only operate this contraption I would be OK...Im using windows 98 SE..I'll give what you suggested a try. Thanks so much

Jody PS Lou you wrote...

To close any such 'barrage' of screens which might occur on your computer, don't use the mouse, use the Alt-F4 button (i.e. hold down the 'Alt' key and press the 'F4' button).

Jody, It seems to me that you might have mis-clicked on the language selection in SpyBot.

The program supports many languages...make sure you chose "English" when you did the install/download. It's really a very good program.

Play "Brazil" for me...

...very nice...now play "Autumn Leaves"...How about "Wabash Blues"...

...Bouncer, get him outta here...

No to your question. Its like newspapers flying out of your hands on a windy day.You
cant close anyone of them. They keep coming on the more that you attemp to close the window.

Like Pop Goes The Weasel,,only those weasels
dont Pop.

Since my last post I have downloaded Registry
Mechanics which is supposed to check all the files including the Registry..when I boot up
I have a very impressive showing indicating
that the Registry Mechanic is doing its job.

I paid $19.95 to download this program and other than it looking hi tech..the windows are flying again when I boot up. I think I got the boot for $19.95.

Each page that is flying is overlapped by another as I try to close a window,,each time
I attempt to close a window another opens up
I have to manually shut down to rid my PC of this problem.

Im going back to radio.

Jody, thanks for the comment about "Registry Mechanic". For some forgotten reason I installed it on my computer some time ago and had forgotten that I have it.

I think I'll go run a scan! Image

Jody, send me your email address. It's not listed in your Forum profile. I had a hard disk crash last week and lost all my contacts. I want to share something with you. OK? Thanks!

I was told that you have to Erase ALL of Mcafee Virus (We have Windows 98) before you can use any other Scans. Last year we Bought Norton, and they downloaded it TO or computer
and sent the CD "Norton" program in the mail. Since then, we have had a "Crash" and when I downloaded Windows, and all the other stuff, I went to download "Norton" and it said I have to "Erase" any other "Virus" programs FIRST....But, Ya Gotta KNOW and have the program that REALLY takes it off. So, I went and got "Destroy it 2000" and "Win Cleaner", But, I'm still not "Finding Them "BedBugs" that Sir Jody Refers to. I THINK he SENT them MY WAY. Image

My question seems insignificant in lieu of the passing of Jeff Newman. To show my respect I ask that you forgive me to ask you
the same question I had asked earlier.

I downloaded Registry Mechanic with all its
fancy do dads...and again after getting the all clear "no problems detected" the windows
started flying again. Can anyone give me a clue as to what is happening.??

Hello,

Perhaps if you could be more specific. What do the windows say? do they cover the entire screen or are they each very small, and when the add up you cant see the desktop behind them? Are they grey colored, and do they have buttons that say "ok" and "cancel"?

If you would like more detailed help, i could give you some step by step help through e-mail. check my profile.

hoping to help,

Just as you posted,,yes they overlap each other and when I try to close one window another one opens..This goes on and on until
I have to shut down manually. Yes they cover the entire screen..I dont recall seeing any
buttons that say "OK" and cancel.

There is no way out unless I shut down, this happens when I open outlook express 6. Any help you have to offer will be appreciated.

Thanks
Jody ,,,,No I cant see the desktop behind them..they overpower everything. edited sort of like seeing a deck of cards being shuffled

Aces wild. Imageand the task bar is loaded from one end to the other with Windows 98 se logos such as Internet Explorer logo's
Cant seem to shake them.
[This message was edited by Jody Carver on 08 April 2004 at 08:00 PM.]

well,
(duh, i just realized, you probably cant mail me if outlook is not working)
obviously it's a problem directly related to outlook express. So if I were you, I would do the following.

1. Uninstall Outlook express after backing up your archive of emails, addresses and things.

2. If the problem persists, you can be almost entirely sure that the problem is related to a particular e-mail you recently recieved that is the FIRST on the list in your inbox. This would happen because since it is the first, it is automatically selected and displayed, so if it has any "malicious code" or viruses, it would activate immediately.

I can't exactly remember where your emails are stored in your hard drive (I dont have a Win98 PC around at the moment) but if your not too intimidated, look for something in your windows folder thats says windows/users/data/outlook express, or something like that.

If you don't feel up to doing this manual search for your emails and such, you could look for a program on downloads.com that backsup your outlookexpress folders for you. (remember they are usually shareware, which means you can use it a few times before actually paying for them.)

I hope I didn't confuse you more...
