Linking to song files?

Is there a way I can post a direct link to song files on my HD.

Hi Charles,

In order to post a file that can be accessed by web browsers you have to upload it to the WWW. Your bellsouth.net account offers 10MB of web space where you can store sound and image files as well as web pages. Here's the link where you can find more information. You can get a free, simple web server for your computer here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/sswww.htm

Keep in mind that if you post a link to your computer that people can only access it when your computer is on and the web server is running.

A simpler way to share files than what I recommended about is a program called WWW File Share. You can find it here: http://www.wfshome.com/index.html

In the Analogx Simple Server Read Me
doc it states and I quote:
"drag the root file you want to serve from onto the application"
Would you be kind enough to explain that for me? More particularily, clarify the root file and the application references procedure.

The root file refers to the home HTML page. Since you are asking this question I'll infer, as I did in my repsonse to your email, that you don't know HTML or how web servers work. That's why I suggested the second program. It's much simpler for what you are doing.

I'm going to be the curmudgeon here and strongly suggest you not attempt to run a web server on your home PC unless you are fully versed in TCP/IP, firewalls, DMZs, and understand how to use stateful packet inspection to filter inbound and outbound traffic.

And I'm not referring to a software firewall like Zone Alarm, Sygate, Kerio, etc. These products are not designed for, and are not secure enough, to protect a web server of any kind.

The most popular exploit on the net right now is to hijack a home user's PC to send spam or run DDoS attacks against other networks and sites. Having a dynamic IP or shutting the machine down when not in use is no longer enough protection. I know of unsecured machines that were compromised within minutes of being on the net.

Michael's response was the best answer for your situation. You have free space available on a commercial server. You should use it to store your audio files, then post links others can use to hear the songs. Let BellSouth worry about the security of their server; that's what they get paid to do.

Please don't take offense. It's just an exceedingly bad idea for non-professionals to run servers of any kind from home. It's not a question of if your machine will be attacked, but rather when.

I can't find a way of going through Bell South to share song files. I notice they have a personal web page but you can only upload images.

I just looked at the BellSouth info and didn't find any restrictions on the type of files you can upload. You may want to contact customer support and ask the question directly. I'd recommend stressing to them that you aren't looking for a place to share copyrighted MP3s, which all ISPs are skittish about these days.

You would need to use the FTP option to upload, rather than the templates they provide.

If for some reason BellSouth restricts files to HTML and images, there are thousands of other providers who will provide server space and allow you to post whatever you want for under $10/mo.

I talked to the folks that do the site for Bell South and they are dummer than dirt and said that music could not be put on my web page, only pictures. It doesnt seem correct but that is what I was told.

Or maybe it's time to just get your own website up and running..

I would stay clear of file sharing from your own PC as mentioned above..way too much risk here...

Companies like Hostway make life pretty easy
and reasonably priced. There are many out there and they are all easy to use.

These WEB hosting companies can offer domain names and templates for the website as well.

And you can also keep adding additional websites off the back of the intital website with a simple command in the address line. Sounds real tekky but it really is not.

Be your own host of anything you want..Music, Photo's, files, Newsletters,
etc...whatever you can dream up ..

You have the power...or it least you can get the power...
