when I defrag, it runs about 7% and restarts,it says ( driver has changes, restarting)
I have no programs running that I know about.
I defrag once a week, have not had any problems with it.
the computer started up in safe mode last week and since then has been acting a little strange.
any suggestions as to what it might be ?
thanks,
Kenny |

Kenny,
I have always used "Disk Keeper" over the default Windows defrag. program. The application is made by "Executive Software". They have a 30 day trial version you can download here: http://www.execsoft.com/products/products.asp Give it a try and I think you will ditch that Windows defrag tool!

Did you try to defrag in Safe Mode? That might be a good idea, since it will probably finish the defrag without interruption. |

I have been defrag. about every three to four weeks ( I don't use my computer as much as some might, so I feel as if that schedule is ok .) Maybe Mark or someone might correct me on my scheduled times as not being often enough !
I have found that if I don't stop my screen saver , Norton program ,& Fire wall program
that the windows defrg will keep restarting and will normally never complete . As long as I stop those, however, I have had no problems with it finishing it's normal cycle. It takes about an hour to complete its cycle on my computer.I also tend to run the scan disk program just before starting the Defrag.
If you stop the programs mentioned , don't forget to restart them after defrag.
This method has worked for me with the defrag. program so far . Just me 2cents worth.

Yes make sure you stop your screen saver(good advice) and any programs that refresh.....but run scan disk before you defrag....and it won't do that to ya anymore.

I've had trouble also. I didn't know I could defrag in safe mode. I have a cable modem and I'm always connected. I'll try safe mode next time. I learn a lot from you guys.

CC,
just right click on any blank part of your desktop screen. Click on properties, then click on the screensaver tab and choose none. That should do it [This message was edited by Buck Reid on 26 December 2002 at 06:05 AM.] |

Earnest, I didn't know about the Safe Mode defrag.
I forgot to mention,
when it went into DOS, i had a hard time getting out of it.
When I finally did,
all my program Icons on desk top, have an arrow in the lower left corner ???
any way to get those off ?
doesn't those arrows indicate a "short-cut" ?
I didn't create any that I know of.
John & Ricky, I appreciate the info about scan disk.
I usually run the Maintanence wizard when I defrag., but not always.
Mark, I book-marked the executive software, gonna check it out further.
thank's all you guy's for the help.
and thanks for the forum,B0b.

FWIW, I have cable modem also. I disconnect my cable connection and disable the screen saver and this eliminates and "running programs" on my system.

My system gave me a similar message, something to the effect of "Windows has had to restart 10 times due to another program running in the background..." I shutdown my firewall and anti-virus and then the defragmenting worked fine... [This message was edited by Jeff Strouse on 26 December 2002 at 02:39 PM.] |

I just go to SAFE MODE and start with DISK
CLEAN-UP. Next is SCAN DISK, but in the standard mode, NOT the super-extensive scan,
as this will easily take all night.
Then DISK DEFRAGMENTER.
Works good-enuff for me. |

I defraged my computer last night in " Safe Mode ". It never stopped and started over and over. It probably took an hour. Before it could take all night.
