Novice question times, folks...

I have some music I'd like to post. Can someone point me to a step-by-step guide on how to do this? (I'm using Windows 98SE if that makes any difference.)

I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times on here but I couldn't find anything using the search function.

Thanks in advance for any help with this!!!

If you want to post it to this web site, what you'll actually want to do is host the file on your own server (or one of the free ones) and then point to it from here with a [url] tag.gs

How do I get it onto the server, though? (Remember, I'm starting from the pre-beginner-not-even-yet-quite-spastic-but-a-tad-knowledgable point...)

Chris;
Download and install an FTP program. You can search at downloads.com for one. You should be able to find a freeware version. Then enter the information from your server and connect to it. There should be help files with the program to guide you thru the process.

Chris, it does appear to be a bit confusing at first but think of it this way, in order to actually post anything other than text, like here on this forum, you need to have a remote storage location up here on the Internet which can be web server space that you pay for, that you get for free or perhaps your own server at home with it's own web address.

Those that post photo's or song clips,
( MP3's) have uploaded the photo's or the MP3 clips to the web storage space which will be used. Each song or photo actually has it's own web address which is linked to the web server that is hosting /storing it. What you do once it is loaded is provide the
direct web address to the photo or song MP3 file in your text message on this or other forums, or in EMAILS. thes are called links or HOT LINKS. Once you have succesfully uploaded a photo or song file the web address for that file will be displayed for you to see as well.

It sounds difficult or confusing but once you do it once or twice it's rather simple.

There are mnay free websites that offer free storage ( up to 5 meg) all you have to do is sign on and become a member. Your web provider most likley offers free webspace for a homepage, thats what you want to use. As Ernie mentioned above, they are very easy to use and offer very easy instructions.

One thing you may want to consider is the file size of the MP3's that you will store or share, folks with dial-up modems may have a difficult time downloading large MP3's,but if you make them too small the sound quality suffers big time. Programs like MusicMatch which offer MP3 conversions can do it at any selected MP3 size format. You may want to experiment with the file format size to see which best suits your needs.

go for it

Thanks, all!

Between your posts and the emails I've received, I may actually be able to catch on to how to do this well within this lifetime!
