I've hit the wrong button somewhere and now I can't get to the control panel and my computer icon doesn't open. Not the first time I've messed this thing up. Maybe a trip to a repair tech. is in order.

Bill, that's how I found out I couldn't get it open. I was trying to download something the other day and I probably hit the wrong button. I don't understand all that computer lingo. I'll have to get out my book,"PCs For Dummies". Better yet, I'll take it to a repairman. Thank's anyway.

All I know is it's Windows 98. I try to do things and it says where do you want this and I never know what they mean. I think I am the fault in default. I should leave things alone.

Jim: Try this. Click on start, then move the arrow up to (Find). On the box at the right that comes up, click on (files or folders.) In that box that comes up type in (control). Then click on (Find now).
In the screen that comes up, double click on control (it will have a little box that looks like an amplifier)and the folder icon should say C:\Windows.
This will open up the control panel screen. |

Ken, that didn't do it either. I'll just take it up tomorrow and have it checked out. Thanks to everybody for your help.

If your "98" program has the "system restore" feature, go back to a date when everything was normal and do a "System Restore" to that date.

Jim V-- Hey, you're really good! Never heard of anyone losing Control Panel befor
Using Windows Explorer, scroll all the way up in the Folder pane (left one).
Left-click on the My Computer icon. It will contain in the File pane(right) an entry for Control Panel. RIGHT-click that and you will be able to create a new shortcut for it.
You can RIGHT-click that My Computer icon and also create a shortcut for it.

Everett,I'm glad to know that I did good! I thought I really messed it up. When I tryed to install my scanner, I took out the maintenance wizard. My local guru said I was the only one that needed help with it. Made me feel good to be number one on a list. |

Kenny, I did see that restore button but when I pushed it a warning came up. My Mom taught me a long time ago not to ignore warnings! Maybe I'll go ahead and push the button anyway. No guts, no Glory.

Jim the system restore is real easy. Just follow the instructions that appear as each step is taken. Select a "good" date and hit the "next" button and the computer will do the rest.

I don't think Windows 98 has System Restore. I think that started with Windows ME. |

Windows 98 had "GO BACK" that would rsstore your system to any date you selected! |

Jim I have "Windows ME". According to Gene Jones, your program has "Go Back" instead of "System Restore". You should be able to access it by clicking on the Windows Logo in the lower left corner of your screen. Clck on "Programs" and you will get another list of options, click on "Accessories", you will get another list of options, click on "System Tools". You should find your "Go Back" program in the list of options at this point. Click on the "Go Back" feature and follow the instructions. Hope this corrects your problem. If it doesn't help, recommend a call to "Technical Support". Good luck my friend.

No "go back" or "restore" option on my Windows 98. Will be giong to XP after Christmas.
I lose the "shutdown" option from the "Start" button about 50% of the time I use the computer.

I finally was able to get everything working again. I had the manual for Dummies, it didn't help much. Went to Sam Goody's and got the manual for Idiots. I put the computer in Safe Mode and got everything working. My system tools took a hike when I added my scanner, never did find them. The only thing I have is Defrag. Thanks for all the help!
